Drinks for City away

Post by Quickenthetempo » Fri Feb 21, 2020 9:01 am

Tomorrow Rotherham are playing at Accy Stanley and before the game their supporters are planning on visiting Bury and drinking in the pubs around the ground. Lots of pubs and other businesses will of relied on the football trade that's now not there.

What a great gesture.

Maybe an idea if we could organise something similar and supporters clubs go there on the way to City. Would be a lovely gesture that could be a lifeline to them until football returns there.

There's only really one pub near the ground.

Staff of Life, Waterloo, Swan and Cemetery, The Trafalgar from my time working there though admittedly that was quite a while ago.

Waterloo and Trafalgar both gone, unfortunately. Swan is a food pub and won't really be missing the football trade too much.

The Staff remains but is probably on it's last legs, surprised it's still going as it relied heavily on matches - basically Bury's Park View. A group of bury fans has been showing old bury games in there on a Saturday afternoon to try and keep things going for people who had no football to go to anymore. Not sure if they're still doing it.

Are you suggesting just staying in the pubs?

There's the rose and Crown and the Stanley Con Club too. If you didn't know of the Stanley you would never find it.

Swan and Cemetery was popular with away fans, still has a large bar as well as doing food.

I don't for one minute think that they're stopping in Bury to help out the local pubs. If they're travelling by coach it's the nearest place that they can stop for drinks, as supporters coaches aren't supposed to stop within 10 miles of where they are playing.

That's a shame. Spent some good times with work colleagues in the 'Traf' and especially the Waterloo in the 70's and 80's. When we played Bury in the FA Cup in 1980 some pubs near the ground closed their doors to avoid away fans congregating but Cecil in the Waterloo let regulars in through the back door and fortunately that included me even though he knew I was a Claret. Happy days though not so much that particular day.

Fair play to them. But it is the logical place to stop enroute to Accy, unless they fancied coming into Burnley!
