Burnley fc old footage?
Just wat hing Portillo in Blackburn, viewing old film of a football match. Colours looked very like our earliest Claret and Blue kit.
Anyone able to confirm, or deny?

Re: Burnley fc old footage?
Little doubt at all that the film is of a Burnley game at Turf Moor around 110 years ago, just a few seasons prior to our first FA Cup Final appearance in 1914.Colburn_Claret wrote: ↑Tue Feb 25, 2020 6:40 pmJust wat hing Portillo in Blackburn, viewing old film of a football match. The film shows the Old Star Stand which eventually became the Longside and the open end behind the goal at the Cricket Field End. The Star Stand was originally seating only but was moved back to accommodate an enclosure in front for a Cup tie against Manchester United (as can be seen in the film).
Our team for that game against Man Utd included the Burnley goalkeeper and legend Jerry Dawson who went on to make a record 569 appearances for our Club.

Must have been confusing when the opposition were also in black and white

Re: Burnley fc old footage?
Ironically we did have a period between 1935 and 1940 when white shirts and black shorts was our first strip. Any photos of the legendary Tommy Lawton in a Burnley shirt will feature him wearing the white and black kit.
Going back further we changed to Claret & Blue in 1910 having previously worn various colours. The idea from manager John Haworth was to pay homage to Aston Villa who were a leading team at the time in the hope that the change would bring about an upturn in our fortunes. It certainly worked and Burnley were a force to be reckoned with for the next decade or more.
After the end of WW2 we reverted to the Claret & Blue from the white and black strip.
Re: Burnley fc old footage?
If the show was referencing Blackburn the video will be the Mitchell and Kenyon lost cine-films.
Re: Burnley fc old footage?
Surely they’re Mitchell and Kenyon’s found cine films!

Our strip was plain green shirts back in 1902 which we kept until 1909.Stan Tastic wrote: ↑Tue Feb 25, 2020 10:24 pmWas it this from 1902?

That link shows the original Old Star Stand which eventually became the Longside terracing.

Re: Burnley fc old footage?
Colburn....looking again at your film in the OP, pretty certain that the player leading Burnley out is Alex Leake. That season was the very first for the Claret & Blue strip and I have a photo of Leake in the shirt and it clearly is all wool.
Can't have been very comfortable in the heat of an early season game but I suppose very handy in the winter months.

Just had a look on catch up, never seem that film before. It certainly looks like Alex Leake but I thought he’d gone before we switched to claret and blue? However, I’ll bow to royboy’s greater knowledge on claret history.
The other thing that struck me about this film is that the keeper seems to be wearing the same shirt as everyone else.

Re: Burnley fc old footage?
In fact the more I look at it the more I’m convinced it’s not in fact the Turf. Where are all the mill chimneys behind the cricket field visible in the 1902 Man United film (and indeed where is the cricket pavilion?). I think it is Alex Leake but probably in his Aston Villa days, hence the kit confusion. 1910 would also be very late for a Mitchell and Kenyon film, most of the ones found were in the region of 1900-05.

I love the fact the referee is wearing his flat cap.
Re: Burnley fc old footage?
Notice that the goal box is an arc in this 1904 film at Ewood yet at Turf Moor in the 1902 film it is a rectangle.martin_p wrote: ↑Wed Feb 26, 2020 12:23 amI was determined to solve this before bed! Here’s the answer to the where and who.

Re: Burnley fc old footage?
Here’s the full film that Portillo was watching on last nights programme on the BFI website. Interestingly this claims a different date and final score to the Adrian Chiles narrated version I linked from YouTube above (from the BFI YouTube channel). It also explains why Rovers appear to be wearing white shirts.

Love the official's outfits.
Tweeds, plus fours, waistcoats, ties and flat caps.
Proper gear!

Quite right too! All this casual wear has led to a lessening of their authority!gawthorpe_view wrote: ↑Thu Feb 27, 2020 7:53 amLove the official's outfits.
