Tuesday night trivia ..
Has anyone had a longer International career than Pat Jennings ?
His first cap, aged 18, was 15th April 1964, in a 3-2 win against Wales, and his last was a 0-3 defeat against Brazil ( 12th June 1986 ) in the World Cup final Group match, on his 41st Birthday ! That's a span of 22 years + over 3 decades .... Peter Shilton was a few months shy of 20 years, and Dino Zoff of Italy, who seemed to play forever, was around 15 years ( 1968 - 1983 ) ...

Re: Tuesday night trivia ..
I think Stanley Matthews might just pip him - debut for England 29 September 1934, final game 15th May 1957.

I think you are right about Stanley Matthews. Also wasn't there a Welsh player called Billy (?) Meredith who had the longest British international career? I'll google now to check.

Re: Tuesday night trivia ..
OK , so far we have ....
Billy Meredith ( Wales ) 1895 -1920 24 years 361 days
Sir Stanley ( Eng ) 1934 - 1957 22 years 228 days
Pat Jennings ( N.I. ) 1964 - 1986 22 years 58 days
Pat Jennings played his first International alongside Alex Elder who played in Burnley's 1959-60 Championship team, and his penultimate International with Steve Penney, who played for Burnley as recently as 1994 !

Re: Tuesday night trivia ..
I think I have the winner as to the longest international career - I'll give you a clue, he played briefly in the Premier League in 2000.

Re: Tuesday night trivia ..
Cameroonian Roger Milla, he of the brilliant goal celebration, and Egyptian Goalkeeper Essam El-Hidary all seem to have clocked over 22 years as well ...

I was once at a sports quiz and this question was asked (longest international career): I'm sure it was some Greek chappie.

Re: Tuesday night trivia ..
To have such an extended career at international level you'd think they would either have to be supremely talented or play for a poor country. Assuming it is the latter otherwise it would be relatively easy you'd think.
My mind is going towards either an African nation or Caribbean? Clue about playing briefly in 2000 doesn't really help me as they are starting to blur.
Possibly someone like Quentin Fotune, Mark Fish or Fitz Hall?

Re: Tuesday night trivia ..
There's a bloke called Frank Lampard who made his debut in October 1972 and his last appearance in June 2014.
(And even that isn't as long as Weah!)

Re: Tuesday night trivia ..
Your clues helped me make an educated guess.
Surprised that he made so few international appearances - but Liberia were possibly at war for a number of those years he was playing ?
As for his final appearance in 2018 I wonder whether that was anything to do with him being Prime Minister (or President) of Liberia ?!!! (if he still was then)

Re: Tuesday night trivia ..
He was indeed President when the specially arranged friendly was played in 2018, when Weah was 51 ... I'm highly dubious about counting this entry !TVC15 wrote: ↑Wed Feb 26, 2020 8:10 amYour clues helped me make an educated guess.
