Walking with the wife and spotted a duck with the colours , feet and markings of a duck with other ducks on the bank.

But it was twice the size like a goose. I've googled but there is no recorded circumstance of successful duck and goose breeding although possible.

I couldn't get the phone out fast enough and only managed to get a shot in the water not doing the gargantuan duck justice.

Anybody ever seen a doose or guck before?

A Shelduck has similar(ish) colouration to a Mallard but closer to the size of a small goose so maybe that's what you saw?

A mate told me about strange crosses they bred in labs back in the 70's...

A cross between a Swan and a Turkey they called it a Swurkey.

A cross between a Wren and a Blue tit, they called it a Writ

They also managed to cross a Fox with a Duck, but couldn't think what to call it.............


Joking aside I think it probably was a Shelduck they are large and like a small goose...

Perhaps there are a few stragglers that have grown due to an abundance of food, and no natural predators post Brexit

The naff pic. Notice the mallard sat in the water just in front. This guy had the green shimmer on his neck and great big yellow duck feet when on the bank. He was the same colour as the younger male ducks and was on the canal near Nelson.

Yellow feet , beak and white collar with green shimmer . Moved and acted like the other ducks. Head shape like the other ducks. I know the pics rubbish and but for the fully grown duck sat in the water in front of this adolescent monster it wouldn't really show his size.

The photo seems to be a Muscovy crossed with a domestic white goose. Hence yellow feet and bill.

We had something similar at the marina in Barton. The duck looked as if it had been assembled from leftover bits. It was completely on its own, never part of a bigger group and moved on after about five weeks.
Local experts reckoned it was an escaped ornamental duck, maybe from a National Trust-type country house collection. It happens apparently.

This was part of a group . Ornamental ducks dont walk and dive.

Very good.

It will be an escapee domestic duck, possibly a Rouen. It may also be a domestic / wild cross. You can never really tell with these ‘manky’ things.

Starting to see more wildlife returning back to the UK or emerging since brexit I've noticed.

Its a Cayuga Duck x breed. A Cayuga is a totally black duck with a beetle green sheen. They are often crossed with a Aylesbury which is a white duck.
Normally the x breed will have a white hoop marking round its neck. Males about 3 times size of Common Mallard.

It looked at the local population and thought it was in the tropics ?

They are quite sort after in pet market. But very hard to breed. Hence the Male Cayuga crossed with Aylesbury female. Females lay very dark green/grey eggs. Can be almost like a sooty colour. Which disappears when damp but comes back when dry. But very hard to breed that shell colour.

A Muscovy or Barbary duck is actually a type of Goose. Even the females don't Quack

Originally yes. I have 4 breeding trios. All Black females with black feet and bills are expensive. Most don't sell till at least 24 weeks plus, and laying eggs. If lay white eggs not a true breed

There's a few of those on Lowerhouse Lodge

4 breeding pairs on queen Victoria park barrowford. only 2 lots sat still enough for me, the pothers were to busy feeding further up.
Not the best pics as was using my phone.

All 8 looked different regards markings, 1 almost all white, 1 all brown.

The strange-looking duck I mentioned earlier, seen at Barton Marina a few years ago, was - according to an article by a leading local twitcher - not a duck but an australian cape barren goose. Go figure !

Has anyone else noticed how the sun seems to be coming up earlier every day ever since Brexit?
