FA Cup 1999-00

Post by TheFamilyCat » Fri Feb 28, 2020 12:01 pm

I was at an event at Pride Park yesterday, venue of one of my favourite away games; the FA Cup tie in 1999.

Quick trivia quiz: what were the two peculiarities of the cup that season?

one is that Manchester United didn't compete in it.

Yes, they went off to play on the World Club competition instead. Darlington lost their second round game but were the "lucky losers" and took United's place in the 3rd round.

I seem to recall the third round being before Christmas, but don't know why.

Yes, the 3rd round was played in December and the 4th round on the traditional 3rd round weekend in January. Had to look up the reasons why yesterday, FA feared there would not be enough free dates to have replays in every round if they'd stuck to the normal dates apparently.

Im sure we all went dressed as Santa?

Andy Cooke scored a header/shoulder, then we drew Coventry in the next round and 10 year old me went dressed as an Arab. Looking back it would probably be deemed racist now

It didn’t work bringing it forward and playing the 3rd round in December. Not sure how it was judged that it hadn’t worked but it was back to the traditional January 3rd round by the following season.

I remember that - was it due to a couple of Moroccan players they had, Hadji and Chippo?

Not the FA Cup but I'm jumping in anyway. 3pm to 3.45pm on Boxing Day 1999, in the last game to be played at Gigg in the millennium, was one of the best 45 minutes I've had as a Bury fan. Sorry.

you can't say Chippo these days. They're travellers...

Me and my mate we are at Cov in about 2002 (the clever back pass free kick goal one) and one of them had the ball. A big chap in front of us asked where they were from.

I replied, “Morocco”.

Big lad, “effin Taliban”.

Still cracks me up now.

I was there that day. It was one of the worst I'd experienced. I still don't like littlejohn

I still miss the old Wembley. It had a magical feeling about it.

You’re not the only one judging by the behind-goal reaction to his goal (the fourth) - https://youtu.be/WfIc9z4Rba8

I loved this game. I drove to Nottingham on the morning to pick up a mate who lived there, only to find him wretchedly hungover from the night before and unable to come. I decided to ditch my plans to drive to Pride Park and instead caught the train. I relieved myself of the spare ticket to another travelling fan on the train for face value and went to a pub near the ground and spent the extra money on beer.
‘Twas a good performance and a great result for us. When I got back to my mate’s house, he had sufficiently recovered to go out for a sesh around the Castle in Nottingham. We went straight out and, wearing my Burnley top, I was welcomed in many of the pubs we went in by gleeful Forest fans who were quite pleased to see Derby beaten at home by a Third Tier Club.
A few free drinks landed on our table whilst we drank in Ye Olde Trip, too.

Didn't Steve Davis get sent off for making a brilliant save early doors?

Yes, he did. The penalty made it 2-0.
