Chris Sutton concedes only Liverpool are better than Burnley on current form
Pundit has been having his say on the race for European football
BY ALEX JAMES11:35, 28 FEB 2020
Former Blackburn Rovers striker Chris Sutton is not known for his effusive praise of the Clarets.
The ex-England international has labelled them a long ball side in the past but, with Burnley unbeaten in five games and in the mix for a European spot ahead of their visit to Newcastle United on Saturday, the pundit has taken a glass half full look at the Clarets.
After defeat at home to Aston Villa on New Year's Day, Sean Dyche's side were in danger of being sucked into a relegation battle but 13 points from 15 has propelled them into the top half and victory at St James' Park this weekend will see the Clarets reach 40 points, the barometer for survival.
And Sutton, offering his verdict on the race for Europe on the BBC Sport website, believes Burnley can be pleased with their campaign and hailed the job Dyche is doing.
"It looked like they were getting sucked into the relegation scrap when they lost four straight games at the turn of the year but only Liverpool have been in better form in the past few weeks," said Sutton.
"Burnley's rise has been built from the back - they have only conceded two goals in their past five league games - and Sean Dyche keeps showing that you do not have to spend big to be well-organised and effective.
"Dyche has done an unbelievable job because he also has instilled the belief in his team that it does not matter if they are on a bad run because they can dig a result out from anywhere.
"They won't make the top five, but yet again they will be fine when it comes to securing their top-flight status and I count that as a success."

To be fair to him the last few times I've heard him on BT Sport he's been complimentary about us. Let's hope the results keep coming then.

Sutton’s not a bad pundit when he tones down the contrariness. He speaks like a passionate fan who also has the experience of playing at the Top Level.

This is the prick who refused to play for England B as he was too good and should have been selected for the England main team ! Needless to say, this was the last time he was selected for England

Re: Chris Sutton Bigs up Burnley...Gamesmanship?
Why would this be gamesmanship, and why is it being on the eve of us playing Newcastle relevant?
Hated Sutton when he appeared on the pundit scene but now really like him. He’s great on 606 and has a good sense of humour. Makes for a far better show than when Savage was on.

He's a nailed-on belmtard and a Hall of Fame founder member of the prick list, but why's this "gamesmanship"?
He's no affinity to Newcastle, as far as I know.

The bloke is a berk of a pundit but very very few ex Rovers players actually supported them ergo very very few of them have any beef with Burnley

Not sure Sutton and Shearer are such good mates. And very much doubt he cares enough about Shearer’s support of Newcastle to play obscure mind games with Burnley. He’s a pundit and he’s correct in saying that we’re one of the form teams in the division.
Re: Chris Sutton Bigs up Burnley...Gamesmanship?
Then I am content to give him the benefit of the doubt and thank him for praising the Mighty Clarets.
