No pressure then, Nick
Gareth Southgate will be at St.James's Park today to watch Nick Pope, before travelling to Goodison tomorrow to see Pickford.
Clean sheet please, Nick.

if he was a touch better with his feet (kicking) then he would be the best English keeper by a mile at this moment in time

Kicking is going to let him down I think. Pretty poor performance with is kicking today.
Better throwing when he can.

Yeah think he’s on one less. May become two less if Liverpool keep Watford out.Vegas Claret wrote: ↑Sat Feb 29, 2020 5:49 pmnot what the commentator on the game said - I just assumed he was correct

If only the person who makes the decision recognised that the priority for a goalkeeper was to prevent goals.

Re: No pressure then, Nick
Whilst I'm not averse to making Pope England's number one, unforunately it doesn't quite work like that.TheFamilyCat wrote: ↑Sat Feb 29, 2020 7:26 pmIf only the person who makes the decision recognised that the priority for a goalkeeper was to prevent goals.
For example, if Pope's saving ability was 9/10 and his kicking ability was 4/10, and Pickford's respective attributes were 8/10 and 9/10 then that doesn't necessarily make Pope a better keeper, nor does it necessarily make him more suited to the England jersey.
Everybody knows that preventing goals is more important for a goalkeeper than being able to kick the ball, but Pickford is also a good shot stopper. Pickford is obviously considered a more rounded goalkeeper, although this season may see that view change. Southgate will pick the players he deems to be the best, there's no reason why he wouldn't.
Re: No pressure then, Nick
Pope's long kicks are nowadays, usually pretty accurate.
His throwing is good. His actual keeping excellent.
No 1 for most of the country.

Re: No pressure then, Nick
It's no big deal, Mr Southgate is regularly sat in the same seat at TM. It is the nearest PL ground to his house, I suppose his life will become a little easier in that respect when Leeds come up next year.
Re: No pressure then, Nick
Goalies don't throw the ball as much as they used to, in the 70's they'd chuck it to the halfway line pretty accurately.alboclaret wrote: ↑Sat Feb 29, 2020 5:40 pmKicking is going to let him down I think. Pretty poor performance with is kicking today.

I assumed at the time it'd stopped when they reduced the number of steps a GK could take, maybe time to bring it back now that they can wander round their box? Unless the lightweight balls make throwing less controllable now?

Why should he jump the queue? His stats are no better than Popes. It is also only his first season of producing it in the Prem. Pope has more experience. He has certainly put himself in the 3 but certainly not as first choice.

On current form Charlie Taylor is the best English left back in the Prem as well.Paul Waine wrote: ↑Sun Mar 01, 2020 3:30 pmHeadline in the S.Times - online edition:

Re: No pressure then, Nick
I suspect Southgate wants full backs who are almost like wing backs. We know Chalie can cross a ball but that is not really how we play and not his strength. That will go against him.
Re: No pressure then, Nick
Pickford's distribution, after picking the ball out of the net, is irrelevant.

Re: No pressure then, Nick
My view of it. I can guess that Pope would have stood firm and caught the first one by hardly moving a muscle.
Much more impressive for the media though what Pickfird did.

Re: No pressure then, Nick
Some are better, some are worse but it depends which you want out of a keeper.Somethingfishy wrote: ↑Sun Mar 01, 2020 3:13 pmWhy should he jump the queue? His stats are no better than Popes. Pope has 2 more cleansheets but has played 2 games more than Hendserson.
Pope has conceded 39 vs Henderson's 22
Pope has made more saves but Henderson has a better save %. 75% vs. 69.29%
Pope has saved 33% of penalties vs Henderson's 50%
Pope has made more errors leading to a goal, 2 vs 1
Henderson has won more aerial duals
Re: No pressure then, Nick
He conceded a soft goal. Not sure how then making a save makes amends? If he had saved the 'goal' then the course of the game would not have been the same and the 'save' wouldn't have occurred.Jakubclaret wrote: ↑Sun Mar 01, 2020 6:36 pmSouthgate might not share that view, the view could be is that he made amends.

Re: No pressure then, Nick
We'll see, I don't think in the grand scheme of things anyway based on a decision, 1 game between nufc Vs bfc & efc Vs mu will be the decider, it's probably studied in greater depth with more analysis.

Re: No pressure then, Nick
Accidentally bumped onto Mr Southgate and Nick very much in his thinking. Really nice fella actually.
Re: No pressure then, Nick
Well at least Pickford is at the joint top of the table of mistakes leading to a goal!
