He conceded a soft goal. Not sure how then making a save makes amends? If he had saved the 'goal' then the course of the game would not have been the same and the 'save' wouldn't have occurred.
Exactly, it is his job to prevent goals and there shouldn't really be so much fanfare when he does. It is failing to perform his duties competently that should be highlighted.

Southgate might not share that view, the view could be is that he made amends.
If Southgate thinks that Pickford making a good save cancels out a very poor mistake then he’s got far less intelligence than I credit him with.

We'll see that's all anybody can do. It's not what we all think, every team sporting any international keeper will automatically want the respective keeper to gain international recognition, it's no different here it's only natural.

[quote=Rileybobs post_id=1220340 time=1583004677 user_id=1050 Everybody knows that preventing goals is more important for a goalkeeper than being able to kick the ball, but Pickford is also a good shot stopper.
[/quote]

Surely the ability to stop shots is a pre requisite to being a professional goalkeeper. Pickford is a good shot stopper as opposed to who?

I did wonder if this post would be pulled up after another Pickford error today. But the fact remains that Pickford is a good shot stopper. He plays for a good Premier League side and represents his country in ‘shot stopping’. He makes too many mistakes, but he still pulls off some great saves.

I’ve stated my view that his errors this season and general form should undoubtedly see another goalkeeper given the chance to claim the number one spot for the European Championships this summer. Pope is currently next in line.

Not according to the MOTD pundits he’s not. They’ve just managed a long discussion on the matter without mentioning Pope once ! Dean Henderson “looms large” over Pickford apparently.

Laughable how ‘unfashionable’ Pope is. I don’t think Southgate will let Henderson leapfrog Pope without the latter getting a chance though. Pope’s been around the England set up for a while now and I don’t think Henderson would be thrown in so close to a major tournament.

Just seen that on MOTD. Not one mention of Nick Pope when discussing a possible replacement for Pickford. It was all about the Sheffield United keeper, who they point out is a Man U keeper anyway and will one day play for them. I hate MOTD and all its presenters and pundits.

It's always the same the club counts when it shouldnt, Nigel Martyn & tony coton overlooked in favour of Chris woods & David seaman, Arsenal & Sheffield Wednesday were more fashionable than palace & man city, the days before man city were heavily invested in, & Wednesday were top flight.

Pope is a lot, lot better than pickford. and the kicking thing is a myth.
All keepers boot the odd goal kick astray now and again.
Pickford should not be in contention for Internationals, I really do believe he is a bad goalie.

MOTD pundits - they are there to say what they’re told

Best Goalkeeper -Pope
Best Political selection - Pickford
Second best keeper - Ryan
Most hyped - Henderson
Most Under-rated -Foster
Best Stand by - Heaton
Best distribution - has nothing to do with keeping the ball outvthe net

So obviously Gareth will choose Pickford

In any event - Pope will not play in the Euros as he hasn't had a qualifying campaign.

I think we can feasibly hope that he gets a good run in the team before the World Cup and makes that.

Didn't Hart miss out, after playing all the qualifiers?

Keano is right, Pickford is not a good goali.

Has far as the save he made later in the game, the ball was shoulder height, ffs I could have saved that.

Sky had a poll today. Who should keep at the Euros.
Last I saw it was coming in:
Henderson..66%
Pope.........21%
Pickford.....13%
Mustn’t be much work going on in Sheffield?
All irrelevant cos covid19 will see it canned for 12 months.
