MOTD

Post by Duffer_ » Sun Mar 01, 2020 12:28 am

Incredibly, in a game of few highlights, Jay's "offside" effort did not even make the cut. Wowww.

so they didn't show the biggest chance of the game ?? sounds about right, I bet he got a right bollocking for not putting that away, very poor miss and could well have won us the game

Yep, got to be tucking those away. They didn't even show a replay on my stream though, so I've not seen it back. Think they played it down because the flag went up and it wouldn't have counted, but that would surely have gone to VAR as a possible pass back?

Hopefully saving all his goals for Spurs.

It would have counted though because the referee correctly gave a goal kick for the miss and not a free kick for offside.
Never mind ---a point well earned which was good for us and not too good for them!

Could we finish top of the clean sheet table? That would be mightily impressive for our defence.

Did we get a mention on MOTD? I thought it was all about how Newcastle can’t score with Shearer spouting his usual stuff.

I Love the Defensive side of our game.. love it. Once upon a time that late charge from Newcastle resulted in a defeat. Great stuff frustrating the opposition.

The positioning and bravery deserve medals, not to mention the electric pace of Taylor, when it counted.

VC would be in order for our Very Clean sheets!

Have to say I thought the MOTD coverage was abysmal. I think there was only one clip where Burnley had the ball which they showed. Gave the impression that Newcastle were dominant - they weren't (in my view).

Also, the penalty shout in the first half wasn't shown. Newcastle fans I spoke to after the game, who had a better view than me, said it was a nailed on pen when Jay-Rod was blocked off. They were very concerned about it going to VAR.

As others have said, I wanted to see the 'offside call' again. I wasn't sure if the ref blew for the offside (which was why Jay-Rod's effort was so poor) or whether he could/should have gone on to score (hopefully) and then worried about the offside). Again, the Geordies I spoke to all thought it was a back pass so wouldn't have complained if no offside was called.

Couldn't be bothered showing Wood's chance (heading wide).

Also, again as WELLERNUT has mentioned, why no punditry on how fantastic that defensive display was, is totally beyond me.

Utter, utter drivel from the BBC and the MOTD team.

Sorry guys, rant over...…. :)

watched it last night, did not know the result at the time,I thought mmmm, watched it back this morning with interest and I think I'm right in saying the only time the mentioned Burnley when the said that Newcastle could not find a way through the Burnley defense, rubbish reporting of the worst kind,

Just watched it back. Agree it would have counted. Hard to beat the keeper from the edge of the box when he is well positioned.

He also made a tackle from Ritchie that saved us a goal, so more than makes up for it for me.

We were poor on reflection; sign of a good team - picking up points when playing poorly.

Defending well is part of a team performance so find it very difficult that anyone should consider it a poor performance. We picked up a point having defended really well.

As for Match of the Day, that was an absolute disgrace on Saturday and all designed so Shearer could talk about Newcastle.

just watched MotD on iPlayer - it's almost as if Burnley weren't even on the pitch and if that's the case, how poor must Newcastle be being unable to beat a team who weren't even playing...

Agreed. Just a platform for Newcastle's most successful ma age, Shearer, to knock his team and management, after spending/wasting £80m.

Lineker doesn’t like us and the little jug eared t-wat if he got it all his own way would spend the whole programme talking about his beloved Leicester and interviewing Klopp or Mourinho.
Shearer is a bottler - he tried at management and failed miserably. He’s decided now to spend the rest of his life criticising Newcastle without suggesting anything positive. Bruce’s record is every bit as good as Benitez so far. They look like they are not going down - and destined for another year of mediocrity until their owner decides to sell up - until then why doesn’t the prodigal son do something more positive and suggest his services free of charge in helping the club with buying and developing players starting with their goal shy forwards ?

The coverage or lack of it of Burnley on Saturday was embarrassing - how they can choose not to show the best chance of the game is beyond me....and rather than give Shearer a platform to spout his crap highlight a couple of burnley players with a shout to make the Euros - Tarks and Taylor. A comparison between Taylor and Danny Rose would have been great as Rose was awful. Or show why Nick Pope is a far better keeper than Pickford ?

Spot on. It was unbelievable.
Ignore Burnley Monopoly.
Pass Pope and Go straight to Henderson !

Why would they not show a comparison between Pickford, Pope and Henderson on errors leading to goal, saves made, clean sheets etc ? It’s really not that difficult to research a brief 2 minute piece of analysis which is actually meaningful.

Match of the Day isn’t there to show highlights of a match but to show edits that support the “story” that the producers want to present.

If you want non-biased, even handed coverage of the match - then forget MOTD

The only people Nick Pope needs to impress are Sean Dyche and Gareth Southgate, and given the latter watched both Pope and Pickford over the weekend, it doesn't matter that the regular one-eyed analysis on MOTD regularly ignores Burnley.

Actually, I'm beginning to like the fact that we are always overlooked on MOTD and - once in a blue moon - get a bit of grudging credit on MOTD2 from the likes of Danny Murphy and Jermaine Jenas. I think it fuels our siege mentality and possibly benefits the team.

Match Of The Day doing their best to expunge Burnley from the Premier League.
On Saturday not even the team name was mentioned in analysis (if they could omit any match footage I'm sure they would). Its a pretty special effort to not even mention the name of the team that currently sit above their opponents on Saturday, and for that matter Arsenal too, as well as being a mere 3 points off a Champions League spot currently. The only comment being from old crisp shagging jug eared adulterer mocking Dyches voice.

Then on Sunday the race for the England number 1 spot is between Pickford and Henderson, forget the lad who currently leads the race for the Golden Glove award, who currently statistically is the best English keeper atm and who has actually got an England cap.

Its frankly pathetic imo.

But obviously we dont fit the Premier League team profile. We live within our means and dont stiff small companies by going into administration because we've spent big on overhyped **** players, we are the smallest club to attain Premier League status and we rarely roll over and have our bellies tickled because the bigger clubs want us too.

It's a hell of a long shot I know, but I'd love us to finish 5th and see what the bunch of cockends do

When you watch it back though, they created a lot of chances - 21 attempts and could really have had 3 or 4 goals. I think we created 2 half chances (Wood header & JRod - if you accept a 1 on 1 outside the box is a half chance).

We defended very well, yes, but when we are playing well as a team we have more possession, control of the ball, and concede less chances.

Like I say though - good to be picking up points in those games.

They didn’t create a lot of chances though. Shelvey firing in shots from 30 yards plus hardly constitutes a chance. Not sure how you think they could have had three or four.

So I’m going for:

Ritchie unmarked free header in first half. Just wide but should have been on target and scored.
Almiron shot after Shelvey long shot from corner, blocked by Tarks.
Ritchie shot deflected on to base of post by JRod.
Ritchie long range shot towards the end, few inches away from top corner.

You go for them then if you consider all those chances - first was no more than a half chance and the next two hardly at all. The last one is a good shot that goes wide but hardly a chance. We restricted them to virtually nothing because we defended well.

Our weekend coverage on MOTD was undoubtedly poor, it’s something the producer needs to sort out as Shearer does this a lot when he’s on and commenting on Newcastle games.

That said, I think our coverage on MOTD this season has generally been fine. I think part of the problem is that we don’t play in games that generally have lots of chances and pretty much everything they can say about us has been said.

Not disputing we defended well. Better than well, in fact. Do feel they had lots of chances to score though and, on another day, could have scored any of the above.

Overall, it wasn’t one of our better performances though - surely we agree on that? If it had have been, we’d have dictated more of the play (other than spell in the first half where we looked on it) and generally defended higher up the pitch so those chances wouldn’t have been created?!

In my view, weakest performance of the recent unbeaten run, potentially since Villa although we were better in the second half in that game.

Not unhappy though - sign of a good team!

Nick Pope was far busier against Bournemouth than Newcastle, made three or four superb stops.
On Saturday, we shut off all routes through to goal, and Pope didn't have to worry, for the most part.

He made one save, not too long from the end, when it was straight at him but on the ground. Given he might have been unsighted, I thought that was a really good save, but otherwise he had very little to do and, for balance, neither did Dúbravka.

Having read this I really do wonder if we did play Newcastle on Saturday! This was the 'report' in the hard copy today!

TBF it's far more interesting than the match. Newcastles poor run is a lot bigger story than Saturdays match report which is probably why journalists and Shearer concentrate on that. I don't mind going under the radar. Saturday was a great point, a great defensive display, but disappointing going forward. No big deal, we are still Burnley , and still not going to win every game.

In their last four home games, Newcastle have registered 48 shots with 13 on target but have scored only 1 goal in a win against Chelsea. They were beaten 0-3 by Leicester and have had two 0-0 draws.
Going off those figures it would appear that "on another day" they may well not have scored ---who knows?

A point for us which was worth more to us than the point that Toon got. We did what we had to do in a very efficient team performance,

Nick Pope was far busier against Bournemouth than Newcastle, made three or four superb stops.
On Saturday, we shut off all routes through to goal, and Pope didn't have to worry, for the most part.
Fair point - Bournemouth did have more clear cut chances and Pope came to our rescue.

In that game we started dreadfully, worse than any part in the Newcastle game as you say, but finished much stronger, so you forget about it. Probably the opposite in the Newcastle game (although we didn’t create the chances Bournemouth did against us), so you remember it more when you’ve been on the back foot all second half.

True. Said to my son before the game that their problem was scoring goals and so it turned out. You’re right, we may still be playing now & they wouldn’t have scored.

Got a point, which as others have said is a good result away in the PL. Take it & bring on Spurs!
