Jay Rod Key misses in games this year
Jay Rod Key misses in games this year
Hi performances have been good recently but it becoming a worry how many guilt edge chances he is missing.
Aston Villa at Home
FA Cup Norwich
Arsenal at Home
Bournemouth at Home
Newcastle Away
You would expect a goal return from 3 out of 5 of the chances or maybe at least 2 from the 5. 4 out of the 5 have been at important times in the game which is even more frustrating
His finishing use to be one of his biggest strengths

Re: Jay Rod Key misses in games this year
I was certainly puzzled by yesterday's opportunity in that he didn't take the ball closer to the goal. He had the look of a player who thought he was offside.

He looked like he stopped for a moment when he saw the flag go up which seemed to make him lose his composure. Always play to the whistle!

Re: Jay Rod Key misses in games this year
He only misses a chance if he is in a position to score. Strikers all go through patches where the ball doesn't go in for whatever reason, they just have to play through that period and keep getting in positions to score, that is what is important.

The linesman can take credit for that for unfairly flagging when he clearly weren't off

Re: Jay Rod Key misses in games this year
All strikers have periods where the ball won't go in.
He's constantly getting into good goal-scoring positions.
They'll start going in soon enough.

Or had he heard a whistle? It did seem a lash more than a shot and he didn’t look concerned. If it was a shot he should have been.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sun Mar 01, 2020 1:55 pmMy view is that he's too far forward and facing the wrong way to have had any chance of seeing the flag

Had Jay taken those chances we would possibly have 5 extra points and would be in 5th. position ! Wishful thinking....
Re: Jay Rod Key misses in games this year
If he put all of those types of chances away, he wouldn’t be playing for Burnley.

But you could also look at the defensive/midfield failings we've committed (ie Villa at the Turf) and say the same thing. Its not just a particular striker's fault.

I suspect Jay is the most critical of himself, don't think we need to knock him. We've been a much better side since he came in to it.
Re: Jay Rod Key misses in games this year
The thing to do is look at other multi million pound players and see how many they get out of the chances they have.

Jay Rod is 36% accuracy - 33 chances missed
Woody is 47% accuracy - 30 chances missed
Salah 45% - 51 chances missed

Am I missing something here? I know he blazed over, but I THOUGHT it was all actually irrelevant because he was clearly flagged offside, so ultimately nothing to see and move on. Was I mistaken?

Re: Jay Rod Key misses in games this year
Whether or not he saw the flag (which only Jay himself will know for sure) it’s getting a bit tiresome having trigger happy linesman when we have VAR. It can affect players when they see a flag so the Lino should be absolutely certain when they flag and err on the side of not flagging to ensure everything afterwards develops naturally.....I suspect, however, it would be a bit like Turkeys voting for Christmas because they will be ending up adding even less value than they add now

Re: Jay Rod Key misses in games this year
I believe assistant refs are instructed to flag in the same way as they did before VAR. The only difference is that the ref is supposed to allow play to continue if it’s a close call.Hibsclaret wrote: ↑Sun Mar 01, 2020 5:08 pmWhether or not he saw the flag (which only Jay himself will know for sure) it’s getting a bit tiresome having trigger happy linesman when we have VAR. Impressive from woody that. He always has been someone who needs service. What jay offers is more of a footballer but less clinical obviously.

Missed a few good chances, more importantly his introduction has vastly improved our football and he has been a standout performer since Barnes injury, in my opinion.
A great signing for us.

Can you really blame him for checking his stride when an offside flag goes up ? Couple of other rather harsh ones too. He adds dimension and variety and I believe him starting and getting his confidence has been a reason for our resurgence .

In the past players have been booked for time wasting for shooting after the whistle has gone. So how does it work now with VAR?

On second thoughts , ive put "i forgive him after utd " BUT I've just remembered that penalty at forest !! Off day yesterday , but he's getting back to the player we used to have and we'll soon have 4 good players battling for 2 places . Nice position to be in .

Re: Jay Rod Key misses in games this year
Probably so but if you can’t be certain who it’s come off and you are about 10 yards away you should keep the flag down. He can’t be sure it’s off the attacker when he flags...
Re: Jay Rod Key misses in games this year
Not really a moan. Just realistically stating a fact that he has been missing golden chances. If the same happened to Chris Wood people would be slating him. However because the lad is from Burnley he gets more leeway. Jay is a very good footballer but his finishing this season has been extremely poor however I agree his all round play has Been good baring Yesterdays game.
But we rely heavily on our strikers to score goals and he really needs to be scoring a better percentage of the golden chances we have created for him.
Because realistically if you was to grade the level of ease of all them chances out of 10 you would be giving them 8/9 on should be scored

I would rather have Jay Rod with his record for us this season than both Almiron and Joelinton who cost a total of £65 million and have amassed the grand total of 3 goals in the PL between them!

Re: Jay Rod Key misses in games this year
Personally I thought he was a signing to please the fans. Thought his best years were behind him. And with his injuries he could be an expensive gamble we couldn’t afford.
Said misses aside, I couldn’t be further wrong. He’s been brilliant and a key reason for our recent upturn in results. His link up play, touch, vision and movement are superb. And he scores plenty of good quality goals.
He has missed a few. But he strikes me as the sort who will score goals from nothing but not always the ones he should. We have Wood to do that anyway.
All four strikers look to bring various different skills to the table.

Totally agree. There are great goal scorers and scorers of great goals and ones that can’t hit a barn door with a banjo.cricketfieldclarets wrote: ↑Sun Mar 01, 2020 10:29 pmHe’s been brilliant and a key reason for our recent upturn in results. We are lucky to have a version of a great goal scorer (Wood) along with probably 3 very unique types of scorers of great goals....a great mix tbh

On top of everything else, he plays with passion and is obviously a real Claret! He wears his heart on his sleeve and for those of us who were a lot nearer the action than those up in the gods you could see and hear what a part he plays in our set up.

Re: Jay Rod Key misses in games this year
Just watched it again on the highlights on YouTube.
Firstly, there’s no way he could see the linesman flag without eyes in the back of his head. And the linesman shouldn’t have flagged in that situation, anyway.
Secondly, it was a half chance in the end. He was through but hit it right on the edge of the box. Keeper was well positioned. Hard to score from there. Think he should’ve tried to curl it low inside the post, or taken another step in the box and committed the keeper. Chip was on but hard to pull off.
Thirdly, he made a block on Ritchie that saved us a goal. More than makes up for it in my opinion.

First thing he needs to do is remember where he is from and get his ******* hair cut
Re: Jay Rod Key misses in games this year
He’s missed some real sitters over the last few games. The one against Arsenal was hard to believe. Agree also that he needs an haircut. Perhaps that’s the problem.

Re: Jay Rod Key misses in games this year
Strikers miss chances. It happens all the time and to the best of them. Just like wingers don't take on a man every couple of minutes. I suspect in recent games Jay has missed more than his fair share, but they are the kinds of chances all strikers will miss. It goes in circles though and goals for strikers at our level can come along like busses.

The reason we are playing so well is largely down to his return.
