New handball rule for next year.

Handballs will be judged on hitting the arm where. the shirt sleeve stops.

Too much scope for cheating for me. Longer sleeves like boxers pull shorts up?

That's the way it is done now isn't it? That's why the two Bournemouth incidents were correctly given as handball.

Remember the days when it was simply a case of the referee deciding if a player had deliberately handled the ball ?

Aye, however, now it has to be decided by a committee ---much fairer isn't it? ;)

No player should have arms, to make sure.

It works for Jordan Pickup-fromthenet!

I thought they claimed it was handball because it hit the badge?

well, that's going to make it clearer.......

can I just ask though, if any part of the ball hits a zone which deems it handball, will it be handball? or does all of the contact of the ball to arm/shoulder need to be in the handball zone? what if it looks like it's handball, but actually is just the flapping sleeve that hits the ball?

I'll shut up then... although its interesting to see that the "experts" deemed both of Bournemouth's goals would have stood if the new handball rule was in place (if you read that twitter thread). of course its subjective though and most Burnley fans would argue for handball.

no that's it, I will shut up now...

idiots...

It would be up to the elbow for me.

Upwards of there takes the deliberate control out of the situation.

I was just wondering who and where all these ideas come from. How long will it be until a, player can be sent off for giving a dirty look?
'Ref - he sneared at me'.
'Okay son I'll take care of it - hey you - off you go - snearing is illegal'.
'But ref I was SMILING at him'.
'I thought I caught a definite snear going on there sunshine - hang on we'll consult VAR - okay - VAR says it was a snear - off you go'.
Said player goes on to lose his career because of the snearing incident and was later discovered selling doughnuts on Colwyn Bay sea front. He doesn't have much of a business as mothers don't let their children go too near for fear of a snear.

Easiest way to clear up all the confusion and uncertainty would be to just make use of the hands and arms legal.

'Hitting the badge' is what was quoted with the Billing incident. Considering a badge must always be attached to a sleeve, that wouldn't have counted under the new rule?

I seem to recall some years ago now that a player did indeed get booked because the referee did not like the way the player was looking at him

But the badge is part of the sleeve. Dermot Gallagher says the guideline is the stitching between shoulder and arm.

I remember my dad telling me that Billy Elliot, a left winger for the Clarets in the early 50s, was sent for giving a look of intent to an opposing player. No one knew at the time why the ref sent him off and it had to be explained via the newspapers in the following days.

But next season it won't be classed as handball, unless it hits skin on a short sleeved arm.

Very true. Football used to be such a simple game until the digital genii started messing about with The Laws of the Game!
Never mind it will give the pundits more to pontificate about and criticise the officials. The game is dying on its feet ---or it could be its hands ---who knows these days?

Could we now see a return to massive 90s shirts?
Once again like this stupid ‘hits your hand in build up to a goal’ rule I don’t think they have thought this through at all. Football is dying and it’s not even slowly anymore.

So they’ve gone for the part of the sleeve that can be moved, adjusted or a complete different length on different kits. Rather than the fixed point of where it joins the main body of the shirt. Wow. They really don’t think these things through do they?

Really odd that you were allowed to kick lumps out of the opposition without a booking in those days but give someone a funny look and it's off you go.

The shirt sleeve stops at both ends. It wasn't clear which one was meant.

Goodness gracious, whoever proposed this new rule won’t be winning Mastermind any time soon.

We can all tell when we move our arm outwards to the side which part is the arm, the bit that moves away from the body. That part of the arm (the bit where the badge is) can easily be jabbed out to stab at the ball and deflect it either at goal or away from goal (especially with the speed of reaction of these guys at this level).

That’s why the current rule is spot on, it just needs applying consistently.

So longer short sleeves will be the order of the day next season :)

The second Bournemouth handball was clear. He stretched out his arm to block the ball. He didn't stretch out his shoulder because that is anatomically impossible. They could use that Bournemouth second one as a guide to what should be handball.

I think all players should wear "smart" shirts, ones that instantly tells the ref whether the ball was touched in a "handball" area or a "non-handball" area.

We could also trial "smart wear" around other parts of the footballer's body. "Smart" socks, for example, could tell the ref whether there was contact, beyond a certain permitted pressure, that was sufficient to award a penalty.

Then we could trial "smart shorts" that would tell the ref whether the player had started to dive before the contact on the ankle, or other part of the leg. It could be a bit like "snicko" - the smart shorts could make a sound to indicate a dive and that sound could be compared with the sound of boot on ankle and use that to determine the order of the sounds.

Of course, we'd also need the smart socks to be able to make a different sound when the player discovered that they could kick their own ankle and make it sound as though it was the defender's boot that initiated contact.

Next season that won’t be handball. That will be classed as hitting the shoulder are will be the same as heading a ball or playing it with the foot. Perfectly fine and part of the game of FOOTball. Fifa are changing human anatomy now. Longer short sleeve shirts will be back in fashion for sure as I’ve said further up.

Would fans entering the ground be given “smart” headphones, or will you need a app to know what’s going on. Or more likely this would only be available to those watching on tv! 😏

I'd imagine we can all pick up the match report, including the result, 24 hours before the game kicked off. The latest AI would have it all worked out for us. Clubs with the most money will be the winners, so nothing changing there.

A couple of teenagers based in Stockley Park will have worked it all out on their Playstations 25s. Highlights and full match replays will be available directly into our heads via our Apple 60XXX (or Huaweis)

Then some "rebel" leagues will get started up, Players playing for fun. referee and 2 linos, jumpers for goal posts.... hmm, remember...
