Our Premier League seasons compared

Post by Grimsdale » Thu Mar 05, 2020 8:05 am

I've put together some charts comparing our points, league position, goals scored and goals conceded during our six seasons in the premier league. Current progress shown in black, last season in red:

Some observations:
- We have more points, had more wins and scored more goals at this point of the season than any other
- We already have enough points that would have seen us safe in each of our previous seasons
- We only seem to end the season well after we've been relegated - let's hope this year will be different
- How good was our defence in 2017/18? Although since the 5-0 loss to Spurs this season we've only conceded 10 goals in our last 12 games
- How poor was our attack in 2014/15, particularly the second half? 5 goals from our last 14 games!
- Despite having more points than in 2017/18, we're still short of that season's 7th place, due to the emergence of the likes of Leicester, Wolves and Sheffield United.

Onwards and upwards!

I thought we hit 4th in 17/18? After the Stoke game in December?

That was only for one day, after the remainder of the midweek games were played we were back down to 6th.

As a stats page has appeared here is our complete league record under SD. I was saving it until season end but I can update it then.

Amazingly, to me. He has managed us against 50 different clubs in the leagues alone.

Proof that we are progressing every year and that the European schedule was the catalyst for the difficulties last season....as the manager has clearly outlined. If you compare the squad depth you will see similar progress even though the last 4 or 5 transfer windows have been an absolute disaster (according to most of the brain cells on here)

Talking about transfer windows the one this summer is going to be the most important one in our Premier league time,we have an aging midfield, need a new right back,Ben Mee isn't getting any younger,we seem to have got away with just one major transfer outlay each season....think we may need to change that this summer as good as the current team is it cant keep up the excellent form its had,im sure you'll agree we need to spend this summer.

Trevor it looks like you have put this seasons Watford result in the QPR line. However many thanks to you and Grimsdale for all these lovely graphs.

One point that struck me from TTs spreadsheet is that it looks like a apart from ourselves and Hull no team has returned to the EPL since Dyche took over. Therefore it's vital that we retain our place in the top flight.

Norwich and Newcastle both have from memory. We kept missing Norwich, they were relegated as we were promoted and vice versa.

We only seem to end the season well after we've been relegated?

Very useful.

Few observations:

crazy in 2017/18 how little our league position changed.

Under Dyche in seasons 2016/17/18/19 our goals scored were on a similar level. Until Dwight McNeil started playing on game 19 of the 18/19 season. After that our goals per game shot up dramatically.

Thanks for the corrections re relegation and return to the EPL. Nevertheless I think it illustrates what a feat it was to bounce straight back and maintain our position which only ourselves and the Mighty Newcastle have done should Villa and Norwich be relegated.

It's food for thought for the people who would rather be back in the Championship longing for th e visit of Luton & Barnsley instead of savouring tweaking the miserable one's nose this weekend.

Very nice & informative charts posted by Grimsdale.

We've just about scraped ahead of cumulative points for that 2017/18 season now but It'll be a fantastic effort if we could somewhere near track that for the rest of the season, I think somewhere between 45 & 50 points would be a huge achievement for the manager & team though.
Nice to see that "goals conceded" tracker flat-lining in any case.
