Gutted but

Post by cricketfieldclarets » Sat Mar 07, 2020 7:34 pm

This is the side that absolutely humiliated us at Christmas. And even without the front two they have some top players. Especially the two who came on at half time.

To be gutted at a draw with Spurs and any of Mourinhos teams shows how far we have come since that five nil.

We battered them first half. Wood and Vydra both could’ve added to our goals.

Arguably our hardest home game out the way now.

UTC.

No this is not the side that demolished us. They are missing two absolute world class players for a start and are in turmoil at the moment. They were there for the taking and we let them off with help from VAR. Very disappointed but we are still in the hunt.

I thought var helped us myself, namely by not reviewing McNeil’s handball for our goal.
Swings and roundabouts.

A clear foul on Wood in the second half..Where was VAR then?

That's both of the North London 'Giants' that have left relieved to have nicked a point off us.

You could argue Spurs were there for the taking, but a point isn't to be sniffed at. VAR could have easily pulled up McNeil in the build up to our goal so I think a point is a fair result. Keeps the unbeaten run going so a thumbs up from me.

It was reviewed but deemed not in the same phase as the goal and as such the goal was not as a result of the accidental hand ball

Yep. Missing two world class players of course. But have a world class World Cup winning captain back and still a very good side.

Interesting interpretation. Still, I’m happy about that!

I think the rule for VAR states that if the handball directly leads to a goal (as Bournemouth against us) then it must be disallowed. The fact that Dwight accidentally handled, then crossed the ball; it was cleared; Jay Rod shot that was saved; then Wood scored - the hand ball was 2 phases before the goal

Stats from todays game

Home Burnley .........................Away Tottenham
Possession
Home 45%...............................Away 55%
Shots
Home 21...................................Away 13
Shots on Target
Home 8.....................................Away 2
Corners
Home 3.....................................Away 5
Fouls
Home 16...................................Away 11

21 shots... to Spuds 13
8 on target... to Spuds 2

Driving to the game today we said we would take a draw after the 5-0 at Spuds in December and walked away from the ground tonight "gutted" that we didn't have all 3 points

Likewise.

Think Spurs would still be trying to score now from open play! Were it not for the penalty we’d have won quite comfortably, I think.

You either have to score, or directly assist the goal for it to be handball.

Ah, I remember the old days, life seemed to be simpler back then.

I wonder if the VAR officials take into account the fact that we benefited from VAR at our last home game and therefore we should get the benefit for this game ....just a thought

More annoyed at the second half performance by Moss and the blatant over egging of fouls and non fouls by Spuds
I am old enough to have seen games between these two sides when one had little theatrics and apart from perhaps Dave McKay the games were easy to referee
I bloody hate this Spurs lot

Have to agree with this, call it unconscious bias or whatever but there will be efforts to ‘even thing’s up’ over the course of a season.

Dyche had been asked in previous weeks about VAR and spoke up for it. Got rewarded.

Was not asked so mo reward.

Instead, prem League rules apply, as normal. Controlling clubs fall over and get reward. Lesser teams get smashed in pen area and get nothing.

Kamara said on GoS this morning basically the same thing after showing the incident where Woody got smashed in the back by the Spuds defender ...

Bet if that had been Ben or Tarka smashing into a Spud Striker then a Pen would be given ...

Jon Moss got a lot of praise on about how he reffed the Manure game (myself included) ... now it just looks like he had his Leeds head on, and how he hates Man Utd more than he hates us, normal service was resumed yesterday.

Driving home last night I was overtaken by a vehicle with the reg plate, B055 REF. Wonder who might be the owner of that.

If it was Moss, you must be the first person he has had the speed to pass!

VAR wouldn't have even considered the ball brushing McNeil's arm ....it wasn't a handball offence (as per the laws of the game)....BUT

Had he crossed the ball and a Burnley player score (McNeil 'credited' with an assist) immediately, then under the laws introduced this year when any touch of the ball (intentional or otherwise, arm in a natural position or otherwise) then I'm sure it would have been chalked off.

It is nonsense of course... I'm sure that law will be reviewed yet again in the summer

you're spot on about the push on Wood. Ridiculous....
