EXPECTED GOALS

Post by MT03ALG » Sun Mar 08, 2020 12:25 pm

I noticed that the stat for Expected Goals for Burnley on MOTD was 3.10 (as opposed to 1.21 for Spurs). Shows how well we played without taking our chances.

Nothing against your post but stats like that are just ridiculous. In fact, I'd go so far as to say they are even worse than VAR.

Nothing is worse than VAR... and I include genocide.

Genocide is not something I ever hope to be involved in, but I get your point.

How come we didn't get anything on the screen for yesterday's penalty?

I exaggerated the point to make the point :D

At a guess, VAR decided it wasn't worth looking at.

Just an attempt to be scientific validating what everybody said yesterday that with the number and quality of chances we created, we really should have won it.

Yes well, that's football. If Wood hasn't missed an absolute sitter, we probably would have won, but a minority on here are putting the blame on Ben Mee for giving away a penalty, even though he was dropped in it by mistakes seconds earlier from JayRod and Taylor.

If, buts and maybes. So many variables. We are now seven unbeaten. Let's get behind the team and make it eight.

P.S. I just burned my toast through writing that. Lucky I didn't set the house on fire.

Strangely, I wasn't criticising anyone in particular. Maybe you should have read all of my post?

I actually thought Wood had one of his better games yesterday but there's no denying he missed a sitter.

I've also criticised Pope for his poor distribution in the past, especially his kicking, but yesterday, so far as I'm aware, he dodn't kick it out of play once or to his opposite number. So that's an improvement. I just wish he wouldn't take at least a minute for each goalkick when we are supposed to be trying to win the game.

Well you can't remember the incident, I can't remember the incident, MOTD didn't show the incident and GOS didn't show the incident. I think the logical explanation is that Wood didn't miss a sitter.

Well as MOD only showed about 30 secs of Burnley's attacks and you probably didn't go to the game, it's not surprising you didn't see it.

More likely is that you're the Deadwood troll just stirring things.

Why did I probably not go to the game? Nobody else remembers Wood missing a sitter and you can't even recall the details or describe the chance. Instead of throwing childish comments at me why don't you just describe the chance or even better point us in the direction of a replay of it?

Maybe this is the incident I was referring to? I thought Wood had missed it completely but I was at the Jimmy Mac end of the Bob Lord, so can't be sure.

From the Sun match report.

"Mind, he was nowhere to be seen when James Tarkowski nodded a Westwood free kick back across goal and Wood should have prodded in from in front, rather than a foot wide."

https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/football ... -mourinho/

Either way, he still missed a sitter.

Judging from the report, no, but does it matter? Wood still missed a sitter that he should have put away.

Next, you'll be telling me he'd seen the flag so probably didn't try.

Let's just agree to differ on this one. Like I said earlier, Wood actually had one of his better games yesterday.

Of course it matters. I quoted your post where you claimed that we probably would have won if Wood hadn’t missed a sitter which obviously isn’t true. Agree to differ if you want, but you’re wrong.

That's assuming you're right about the offside. He still missed a sitter and often does.

My whole point was to stop people blaming Ben Mee for us not winning. Try reading ALL of my post instead of just picking on one sentence.

Going to watch Utd get beat now, hopefully, so don't expect another reply if you respond again.

I read and quoted your whole post. I don’t disagree with the rest of it - I was just pointing out that Wood didn’t miss a sitter which could have cost us two points.

I've just watched the miss on Claret's Player. It was in the 42nd minute. Phil Bird said "It was a really bad miss you know." He then said that he might have been offside. Unfortunately, the linesman isn't visible and the action moves on, so I guess we'll never know. It was still a bad miss though. ;)

It wasn’t a bad miss. It hit his thigh and went just past the post. He had no time to react and there was an offside in the move. As it was a goalkick the lino possibly didn’t bother flagging.

So Phil Bird doesn't know what he's talking about? Fair enough, I thought he did. After all, he's been part of BFC for nearly 20 years.

As I said, I don't know what the linesman did. Freekick or goalkick, it would be hard to tell the difference.

The linesman's flag went up just as the ball hit Wood. Tarkowski looked offside to me and clearly the lineman thought he was, too.

I’m not having a pop at Phil Bird. He’s sat high up on the halfway line and the incident was on the blindside from his seat. I’ve got the whole match on dvd and I’m just giving my opinion after watching it again.

I don't care about stats or expected goals - stats are just there to give someone something to do. Just like I said for years about possesion stats being meaningless (we have PROVED that). Stats just give pundits something to drivel on about pointlessly for ages after a game and for managers to claim they 'did enough to win' when they have just lost. Only one stat matters - who has most goals at the final whistle - no other stat matters in the least.

People should stop trying to make football complicated...it isn't...it's a very simple game with only one end in mind, trying to score more than the opposition. We should remember that stats are there to give people like Lineker et al a reason to exist.

We should rememebr that stats are there to give people like Lineker et al a reason to exist.
Does this mean we should get rid of Mark Howard? Surely he's just over complicating things with all his silly numbers.

Re: EXPECTED GOALS

Yeah I suppose. Listen bud football did fine without 'stats' but if people want to read about them and quote them to give them something to brag about (we might have lost 4-0 but we had 90% possession so that's okay) then let them, if it helps them sleep at night. Personally I have more interest in the mating habits of iguanas. I'm not about to get into any kind of argument here about stats - if you like them fine. I'll tell you something mate and I'll be honest, I haven't a clue what 'expected goals' means and to be frank I don't care, I prefer actual goals, preferably more for us than the opposition.
