1965 Polio in Blackburn
If my memory serves me right then Deadwood closed down for weeks during a public meetings ban in the town in 1965.
Did they go down at the end of the season - they were certainly weakened by the disruptions?

Re: 1965 Polio in Blackburn
Not aware that Ewood was closed down but they did have some games postponed at the start of the season but played others. Made a bad start, never recovered and went down.
We were lucky. The outbreak reached Accrington but missed us.

I remember getting a sugar lump as a vaccination. Serious question. I got asked if I had a flu jab recently. Do I need one or is it for people of a certain age?

Re: 1965 Polio in Blackburn
It was all over in a couple of months wasn’t it? It began in June and all vaccinations were done by September.
Their season began away at Fulham on 25th August and their first home game v Fulham the week after on 1st September. It looks like they squeezed the games in during September and October.
Their crowds were low that season throughout as they were terrible and on their way to relegation. 7x crowds under 10,000, with 4x under 8,000. The really low crowds were at the end of the season.
Looking at their crowds around the fixture, Burnley must have taken a huge following to Ewood on New Years Day as 28,000 turned up. For comparison they only had 14,000 on versus Man United who used to take massive followings even back then.

I remember the vaccination on a sugar lump. Also remember queueing for ages around the Town
Hall, over Manchester Road and into the Health centre on Elizabeth Street.

Flu jab is offered to anyone over 65 or younger if they have a condition like asthma.Claret32yrs wrote: ↑Mon Mar 09, 2020 8:30 pmI remember getting a sugar lump as a vaccination. Serious question. I got asked if I had a flu jab recently. Do I need one or is it for people of a certain age?
Re: 1965 Polio in Blackburn
We had our polio vaccine on a Sugar Lump ...
Worst one though was the BCG one at secondary school a 6 needle thing in the wrist.
Had to have a Smallpox one in 69 before going to the USA that wasn't fun either...

Went to the game at Ewood Park v Man Utd. Saw 2 games in a day as also went to Burnley v Leeds in the afternoon. Black urn played Sat. night for some reason. The game we win 0-2 on New Year's Day was the one when Ralph Coates sat on the ball. Down to 10 men too as Willie Morgan had been sent off.

Re: 1965 Polio in Blackburn
All over 65s are offered flu jab, every year. Also those with health issues, e.g. Cardiovascular disease are offered whatever age. I think it's now also offered to youngsters (not certain of age range) as they can be big spreaders. Many employers also offer flu jabs, I remember first getting jab 1979/80. It costs maybe £12 for flu jab at chemists. Worth getting the jab and avoiding the flu, and help spreading it to others, especially those who aren't able to get jab.Claret32yrs wrote: ↑Mon Mar 09, 2020 8:30 pmI remember getting a sugar lump as a vaccination. I was there also. Willie was sent off after retaliating to a Mike England elbow. So was England. All hell let loose and Coates just sat on the ball well away from the other 21.

Re: 1965 Polio in Blackburn
It depends whether you want Flu or not.Claret32yrs wrote: ↑Mon Mar 09, 2020 8:30 pmI remember getting a sugar lump as a vaccination. Serious question. I got asked if I had a flu jab recently. Do I need one or is it for people of a certain age?
Flu is bloody dangerous and kills 650,000 people worldwide every year, including about 9,00 a year in Britain. In fact the Chief medical officer used Flu today in his comments, and said no one panics about that, so why are they panicking about Coronvirus.
Older people and people with certain conditions get the jab free. If that doesn't apply to you, then you'd have to pay.

I have my flu jab every year and have done for some time. I'd get it free now because of my age but did before that through asthma & diabetes.

Re: 1965 Polio in Blackburn
Very big following that day but Rovers turned up for their big one. I went with my dad. We stood on the Riverside. No changing ends at half-time. The away end was the Blackburn End in those days.Claretforever wrote: ↑Mon Mar 09, 2020 8:47 pmIt was all over in a couple of months wasn’t it? Re: 1965 Polio in Blackburn
Should have been more specific. I am a bit ill educated on it. I think I have had a flu jab many years ago. I guess what I meant was. A flu jab needs updating? I.E. It's not like the polio or TB vaccine which lasts for your life time? I'm 47 and when I get a cold the damn thing lasts for months, as has this one I currently have. I'm generally healthy though. Is there an age group more susceptible or is it recommended for people over 60?Gordaleman wrote: ↑Mon Mar 09, 2020 11:49 pmIt depends whether you want Flu or not.

However. Having read the posts above. I clearly need to bear in mind getting a flu jab at some stage.

George Jones signed for Rovers from Bury that summer and he mentioned it as the reason they went down when I spoke to him for our programme.

I started school at St Marys College Blackburn in September 1965 and was bussed in from Rossendale. I remember being asked if we had polio vaccine when boarding the bus. However school went on as normal as far as I remember despite the contagious nature of the disease.

Also remember the sugar lump at primary school mid late 70’s . As for Blackburn it’s always has been an area where old or diseases thought extinct still openly thrive . Walk though the town centre on any given day and you’ll be exposed to everything from leprosy ,smallpox ,diptherea and quite possibly cholera

When you are 11 the 6 needle thing looked like a medieval torture thing
