Who is this referee?
Does anyone remember this incident at Wembley? Do you know what had happened and who the referee is with the police?

Re: Who is this referee?
Think it:s the aftermath of the quarter final at Wembley between England and Argentina in 1966. The Argentinian's not at all happy( and to a point understandably so). The ref's name was Rudolf Kreitlein.

The Argentinian was called Rattin, and I think the ref's name was somthing like Kreitlin.
I' ve done this without looking it up. Amazing really considering it was 54 years ago, and I can't remember what happened yesterday.

Re: Who is this referee?
Was that Rudolf Kreitlin, the German referee who officiated in the horrible match between England and Argentina in the Quarter Final of the World Cup in July 1966?
From memory, he had sent off at least one Argentinian and at the final whistle he was surrounded by their players and I am sure that one aimed a kick at him.
He was only a small guy and one of the Argentinians he dismissed was failry tall and did not take kindly to being dismissed
I was at the match ---it was not a good thing to see on a football field!
I was posted to Germany a few months later and saw him referee a couple of games in the Bundesliga but I don't think that he continued for very long.

"The history books aren’t filled with stories about referees who were decent or above average though. Kreitlein is amongst the few referees who have managed to make a lasting impact on the history of the game. Being chosen to officiate in the 1966 World Cup in England, Kreitlein was given the difficult task of handling the quarter final match between England and Argentina.
After 35 minutes two English player and three Argentines had already been handed their a warning by Kreitlein. Midfielder Antonio Rattín in particular had the biggest problems with abiding by the rules. Kreitlein warned him for the first time in the 17th minute, and for the second time in the 32nd minute, before telling him in the 34th minute of the match:
One more you go out.
Rattín continuously shouted at the German referee, who in the end decided to send the Gaucho off. The 1, 91 meter tall midfielder didn’t accept the 1, 68 meter referee’s decision, and continued to argue feverishly The game couldn’t be continued for 7 minutes, whilst Kreitlein’s supervisor, Ken Aston, tried to convince Rattín to leave the pitch. In the end the Argentine was forced to leave the pitch courtesy of two English policemen.
An Argentinian kicked Kreitlein in the calf while he was leaving the pitch after the match, and the Argentinian FA tried to get Kreitlein knocked off the list of official referees for the World Cup after the match. Kreitlein was, however, defended by FIFA’s officials, and was even praised by FIFA president Sir Stanley Rous after his performance in the match between Italy and the Soviet Union during the group phase:
Today we saw the refereeing performance of the man who is going to officiate in the final.
Germany reaching the final however prevented Kreitlein from achieving this honor (which is only bestowed upon a select few referees)."

Re: Who is this referee?
match report by Alan Tyers included:
There is some ill-feeling after the final whistle. The English celebrate, the Argentine players though are surrounding the referee. It appears that his shirt has been ripped.
Dear me, this is not acceptable behaviour.
The referee is ushered off the pitch by security guards and policemen, disgraceful scenes. George Cohen is about to swap shirts with an opposing player when Ramsey rushes onto the pitch to prevent him.
“George you are not swapping shirts with that animal,” he shouts. Extraordinary.

It was Kreitlein - the bloke behind him I think is Ken Aston who was in charge of all the referees for the tournament

He was a World Cup referee in 1962 in Chile (also reffed the '63 FA cup final between Leicester City and Manchester Utd).
He was then appointed to the FIFA Referees' Committee for eight years (chairing it for four).
He was in charge of all referees for the 1966, 1970, and 1974 World Cups.

Re: Who is this referee?
Rudolf Kreitlin was also appointed to referee the 1966 World Cup Final but had to be replaced once West Germany qualified for the final

Re: Who is this referee?
I'm sure it was Ken Aston who referreed the infamous Battle of Santiago in Chile in 1962 between Chile and Italy. Incredible scenes and fouls in that match. Well worth a watch for anyone who hasn't seen it especially the foul that leads to the sending.off of Italian defender, David.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Tue Mar 10, 2020 12:04 pmIt was Kreitlein - the bloke behind him I think is Ken Aston who was in charge of all the referees for the tournament

Re: Who is this referee?
The incident with Rattin led to the introduction of red and yellow cards. Ken Aston came up with the idea while stopped at traffic lights on his way home.

Does anyone else think the ref looks like a balding Jose Mourinho?
