Chairman relishes another crack at Europe!

Post by IanMcL » Tue Mar 10, 2020 10:04 pm

Burnley chairman Mike Garlick says the Clarets will 'relish' a second European tour in three years if the Clarets end up qualifying for Europe this term.

Sean Dyche's side are unbeaten in seven Premier League games and sit 10th in the table with nine games to go.

The Clarets are just four points adrift of the top six in the battle to claim a spot in next season's Europa League with a host of clubs trying to chase down Manchester United in fifth.

While claiming a place in Europe might remain a long shot, the Clarets are all but certain to achieve their first aim of staying in the Premier League.

Chairman Garlick said that has always been priority number one but the Turf chief says he would welcome a return to Europe.

Suddenly all talk is of Europe and not a relegation battle and it is crazy how quickly your fortunes can fluctuate," said Garlick, writing in his programme notes ahead of the Spurs game.

"I think it is fair to say we would all embrace another European adventure as we can feel slightly aggrieved at the three tough hurdles we had to overcome in Europa League qualifying two years ago.

"Equally there is a balance to what you can wish for and what is realistic.

"Staying in the division for another year is our number one aim and if we don't already have the required points on the board to be assured of that then we are surely agonisingly close."

Would have been a bit easier had we done what we should in both games and beaten them though.

This title is misleading. Does the Chairman actually believe that we had a crack at Europe previously under his tenure?

Not sure how prepared we'd be for it or if Sean would risk full strength with the size of our squad.Last time, well Basaksehir went on to finish 2nd that season and THAT referee in the second half v Olympiakos was borderline criminal. How we didn't paste them at home was as much down to bad luck as anything. That said. The squad needs a bit of a overhaul in the summer with OOC players etc. Not sure I'd welcome a foray into Europe this coming season.

That's a fairly confident statement when you look at the league positions, our run in, the way Arsenal and particularly Spurs are currently playing and the not-too-consistent form of most of the teams above us. All-in-all I'd say the chances were very realistic. I'm, not saying it will happen but to say it won't is a tad defeatist I would say.

You’ve got to be mental to not want us to get into Europe😂 I’d take another European tour at the expense of being crap for half of next season if it were to play out like last time.

'Another crack at Europe' - As in seeing fans travelling 2000 miles to Istanbul to witness Jon Walters trying to play on the wing :o

I sometimes wonder who writes those pieces for Garlick - what's been posted here is what was in last Saturday's match programme.

Nor would I, and would go again should we qualify. Even if we re-signed a retired Jon Walters and played him out wide.

Possibly but not going to happen as the other teams are better and have better players - we could now go 4 - 5 games without a win - thats just the way it is.

Some may have better players - that is open to argument I suppose - but how many have Sean Dyche in charge? And many would say that for instance Everton have better players but you wouldn't think so this season. Interesting piece I read this morning actually concerning Spurs. They have undoubtably better players than us but they are nowhere near being a team at the moment. The PL for once, this season, is as open (apart from Liverpool of course) as it has ever been in it's history I think so just about anything is possible (apart from Norwich surviving :D ). The way things are looking it is distinctly possible that at least two of the so-called big six won't be in the top 6. And if United don't buck up and Wolves and Sheffield Utd carry on there could even be 3 of the 6 missing from the top 6. Very exciting times - be a terrible shame if the virus ballsed it all up.

Personally I'd prefer it if we finished just outside the qualification place. We'd probably end up spending what we earned for that extra place on travel expenses etc. Can we? No reason why not. We're not far off the Champions League spots. We have nothing to play for realistically than places. Depends on the mentality of the squad. We do tend to get the sun lounger out usually when we have nothing to play for. Let's face it. We'd never win the Europa League. Maybe get some more exposure internationally but I'd rather we didn't qualify. Slowly building would be my preference. If we do make it, I wouldn't be disappointed though. We've come a long way.

Arsenal are one of the form teams in the division. They're on a better run than we are.

If we do get another European tour then please let it start in the group stage of whichever competition we get to enter :)
