Gardening advice.
Hi, just wondering if anybody can recommend any surface sheeting or substrate to stop weeds emerging thru a gravel bed, I don’t want to poison them or burn them, it’s a weekly task there grow that fast, I’ll go to BQ or order online or ask fellow gardeners at the allotment, thanks?

Re: Gardening advice.
I use visqueen - just put a fork through it in some places to let the water drain through. Sits nicely beneath gravel and I've had no weeds coming through for over 3 year. You may need to pluck an odd small weed growing between the gravel but they have negligible roots.

Re: Gardening advice.
Most garden centres sell a membrane which allows water to drain through but prevents seeds germinating. I used this method for years and apart from the odd shallow rooted weed,it proved very successful. Mine started to breakdown after about ten years so it lasted quite a long time. I can't remember the makers name but if you ask I'm sure most garden centres will be able to help.

Heavy duty weed fabric. Pegged down with enough gravel over the top to stop any light getting through, especially around the edges. Water can pass through it so don’t put holes in it.

Re: Gardening advice.
As a gardener I use black visqueen , any fabric will grow weeds eventually
Nothing will get through that
Nothing will get through that
Re: Gardening advice.
These fabrics will stop weeds growing through that already exist but will not stop wind or animal born seeds germinating in the gravel and rooting through the membrane. Grasses particularly but other weeds too. These will be quite a pain to remove if allowed to get established.
The matting can also be a nuisance if the gravel is moved about and you have to rake it level occasionally. The thicker the layer of gravel the better.

Re: Gardening advice.
when we did an area of the garden quite a while back to make a complete change, everything was taken up except for the bigger bushes and trees, we simply laid black bin liners over lapping, a few holes here and there for drainage. 7 tons of river rock then hauled by hubby and eldest over two days and hey presto a rock bed/garden where a "dry wadi/water course was developed as meandering around bushes and trees.
Lot of work for a few days but for years hardly a weed poked his head up, I did ask if he would line the dry wadi, put a sump in with pump and actually have water flowing, he completely refused. The eldest still talks about as his week of hell as he visited from UNI, lol.

I think that gardens this summer will be absolutely superb So many people on 'Gardening leave' because of Covid-19.

Re: Gardening advice.
Just came to post something very similar. Working from home, no sport to watch, gardens are going to get some attention when the weather improves. Next door might even clean up after his dog....Gordaleman wrote: ↑Fri Mar 13, 2020 1:00 pmI think that gardens this summer will be absolutely superb So many people on 'Gardening leave' because of Covid-19.
Come to think of it, I’m putting up a bigger fence, that’ll give me something to do.

The Mrs has just bought a shed load of weed fabric. We're digging up most of the lawn. Wished I'd read bout this Visqueen before.
