Newsagents by Turf
Re: Newsagents by Turf
Between Brian and Mary i remember the Holdsworth's (peter and Gillian i think) then Maurice and Anne Bird and sons (all massive clarets),and then the coopers something always seemed to go wrong health wise in that shop before Taff took it on, the paper shop.had an ex builder take it over from Frank he only lasted a few months and then another family whose name i can't recall but i remember the porn mags all moved lower down the shelf next to the door when they had it, Susan soon changed that when she took over, always was a spoilsport our pitbull

Used to buy match programmes there to avoid the queues inside.
Re: Newsagents by Turf
claretfm, I often wondered what your upto, since you left the shop and moved to Colne. I did a bit of babysitting for you both , with my wife, when I lived on the block.
Since your mate Bill Cranston ex PNE player retired, I’d no way of finding out how you were. Are you still playing snooker. Did your daughter (Elizabeth) make a success of her musical talent

Frenchclaret, the lady I referred to earlier, I'm told isn't your sister, but the lady next door called Pat. I was told of some of your family ties and was delighted to learn your Grandad was Joe Midgley, who I knew well, from the time we spent in the Tap Room at the Park View.

Hi BFC,
Yes, Joe was my grandad and moved to the retirement bungalows behind the Turf. Naturally his local was the Park View. I did wonder about the description you gave of my sister who never wore glasses. Who did you get the correction from and the news about Joe?
I had a word with my sister about the newsagent and she did remember the Medleys. We moved away about 1950 when my mother fell ill and we went to live with my grandparents for a little while before buying a house in Burnley Wood, nearer to my grandparents. I was about 7 years old by then and caught two buses to get to school at St Johns - how many kids of that age would do that today?

Hi JohnDearyMe,
Yes I went to St Mary’s College but I lived in Burnley until my early 20’s. However, I was very friendly with a lad from Haslingden, (the elder brother of Silkyskills), if M.E. is your dad then he will know who I am. We went on the Turf together in our teens.

As for the newsagents - Medley’s & Starkie’s were two generations of the same family.

Re: Newsagents by Turf
Joe was a character but had quietened down in his old age. He was one of the oldest turnstile operators on the Turf and when he finally retired from that job, in his eighties, the club gave him a season ticket for the rest of his days. When he died in his nineties several members of BFC backroom staff came to his funeral or stood outside the Turf as his corsage went past. He had been a Burnley supporter since boyhood and he took me on the Bee Hole end when I was a small boy and I became a Claret for life.
Re: Newsagents by Turf
Frenchclaret, if you want to ask Claret Tony for my E Mail address, you can get in touch that way and catch up with memories. I won't give details on here, of the person who told me of your Grandad.
I also went to St Johns, as then, there wasn't a junior school at St Mary's, which was one part, the girls school, before St Hilda's was built and the other separate part for the boys
I used to get a lift to school on the horse drawn Co-op milk cart, delivering milk on the way. There used to be a school bus home, which parked on Ivy St and would drop off at the Wellington lights. We used to come out of class most days and run it to beat the bus to the Wellie. That's a long while ago. I'm still running, but now, it's only to the toilet.

Re: Newsagents by Turf
Bfc, on retiring from the newsagents I had a few short-term jobs finally ending with one in the transport dept at Colne police station which I finished up managing for a few years before retiring in 1997. I lost part of my eyesight in one eye which put paid to the snooker (I wasn't very good anyway). Liz went to the RCM in London for 5 years and stayed down there where she married and teaches bassoon and piano at a few schools and freelances bassoon playing in the SE. I can only recollect Brian Miller's daughter baby-sitting for us with her boyfriend (later married) could that be you?

That's right. He sends his best! He's mentioned your time together supporting the clarets quite oftenFrenchclaret wrote: ↑Mon Mar 16, 2020 2:12 pmHi JohnDearyMe,

JohnDearyMe, Yes that little park was an ideal playground - there were a load of kids living round there then. John worked for a Bournemouth based firmand lived there but after a few years he went to live and work in Los Angeles selling the firms wares in the US. He eventually married had 3 childrenand then had a desire to work for himself and he bought a business in New Zealand a few years ago and now lives there(his wife is a Kiwi originally).

Give my regards to your Dad. We were at college in London, at separate colleges, and managed to see the Clarets there in the First Division. We haven’t seen much of each other since those days but I hope he is well and looking after the scrap books he kept of the Clarets seasons when we were the best team in the land.

Re: Newsagents by Turf
I spoke again with him tonight and passed on your message, which he was very happy to receive. He thinks the last time you might have seen each other was the 2nd Swidon cup replay and mentioned your trip to Highbury in 63 where your dad got you 2 stand tickets. The scrapbooks are still going strong and he says he hopes to meet up again. Said they were happy days and he has many fond memories of you all "watching the boys together"Frenchclaret wrote: ↑Tue Mar 17, 2020 10:52 pmHi again,
