Close Scotland Off?
Close Scotland Off?
would it be worth closing an imaginary border with Scotland for a month, let NS see how life would be after independence?
Of course I don't really believe we should, let alone think we would but just thought I'd jot it down as a fleeting thought.

Re: Close Scotland Off?
Hey bud if ever you come back look me up - 40-odd years is far too long. The irony is The Crown (now called the Bees Knees I think) is the only pub in Rawtenstall now. Remember when that was the staring point for about 3-4 busloads of us Clarets from Rossendale? Ha ha - you in that long coat you used to wear complaining that Paul Fletchers bin was always too heavy.Steve1956 wrote: ↑Mon Mar 16, 2020 3:13 pm17 months and counting Ian,been back home about five or six times in that time to visit my Mum and take in a game its either snowed or plssed it down on each ocassion after i left behind a fantastic sunny climate here,Rossendale has very strange weather and is a weird place but eventually i will come home to settle for my final years .....it is also a wonderful place to live.

The Bishop is a Indian restaurant now,the Shepherd 's White Lion Railway Tavern and i think the Ashworth Arms on Bacup rd is still going with Melvin Harrison still the landlord he must be in his 80sBuxtonclaret wrote: ↑Mon Mar 16, 2020 4:01 pmNot stopped off there for a beer in ages. Re: Close Scotland Off?
It did cross my mind this morning, simply because in a situation as serious as this. Surely all the nations devolved or otherwise Government's should be singing from the same same hymn sheet. No point limiting crowds to 500 in Edinburgh, then there's a gig in Berwick where crowds are ok at 5,000 strong and 2,000 Jocks attend. Defeats the whole point.

Re: Close Scotland Off?
Ashworths always looks closed up when I pass it mate. Went past the other day and it doesn't look like the windows have been cleaned in a year. It was shut anyway. White Lion is still going I think and the Shepherds but the town centre pubs are all gone bar the old Crown. Even the Queens is gone now and that was a haunt of mine for years - played more gigs there than I've had hot dinners. The Sun was ploughed into the ground years ago. The Rams Head has been a couple of things but I think it's a hair dressers now. Old House at Home up Newchurch Road long gone. The Railway was changed to the Riverside Inn but don't what is going on there now. Not sure if it was a Chinese at one point. Not been up Bury Road in ages and I used to live just up from there as you know. The thing is Rawtenstall died years ago mate but there are definite signs that it is getting a new lease of life as me and my wife were saying only last week. Some expensive shops on Bank Street (a friend of mine has one), there are some trendy-ish bars and property is still on the pricey side. Main problem now is the traffic, it's bloody awful at peak times and it seems that roadworks are a permanent fixture these days.
Re: Close Scotland Off?
I like Brighton as a place though.
Blackpool early July without the Scots would go bankrupt surely.
We do have a timeshare mid August on the bank of Bonny Loch Lomond but already decided not using this year, nothing to do with the virus though.
My eldest moved to Ramsbottom recently and was very pleasantly surprised with the bars/pubs there as had not been in decades in reality.

Re: Close Scotland Off?
Left Rawtenstall as 2 yo.
But later on spent school hols at my Grandma's all through 60s.
Before I was old enough to drink, remember Stan Wainwright was the landlord of the Bishop Blaize.
With his handle bar moustach and violins decorating the walls. He could play too!
His sidekick, Polish Eddie used to take me to the Turf before I was allowed to go myself.
Both old family friends.
Still shared a beer with them until the mid/late 80s passing through on my way to the Turf.

Re: Close Scotland Off?
For goodness sake that might explain a few things. Every time I go past the door is shut and as I said it looks derelict. I don't personally know Melvin - how long has he had it because a mate of mine's dad used to have it in the 80s. Is his surname Ralphs? Did he used to live in Canada at one point? Colin Ralph was a mate of mine back in the day but as it happened we were also at school together for a short time when he just came back from Canada.

Re: Close Scotland Off?
Seems the Scots are spreading this almost as fast as the Welsh . While I appreciate Wales is a poverty strewn country of little value and even less education,I’d have expected slightly better from the Scots . Yes there’s obesity ,alcoholism, drug use, simpletons and a diet rooted in chocolate and chip fat but St Nicola of Sturgeon should have surely told them to stay out of spoons for a few days...

I was elsewhere scrambling about and visiting an old lady, before the ban sets in!
Glad you think of me though Kate!
This closing the world is not good.
Stay well.
