Mitchell stubbed his toe and it trickled to Thompson. Chalk and cheese the two cup games that season. Amazing 3rd round tie against Utd and then this one.

No floodlights gives it early/mid 50s :)
Anyone else sick of the mags in the cup?

Just 12 days short of 46 years for a semi final defeat and it never properly heals. Seems like it started some 20 years earlier for some, though.
Married a Geordie later in 1974 and still together so not all bad. :D

Seems like only last week in some ways that game.
Probably because I shop in Sheffield a lot these days since moving.
No bigger disappointment as a Claret than that Semi.

My ticket had me in with the Mags on the big open end.
There'd have been a lot to say these days about that ticket cock up.
But to be fair, the Mags I ended up with were good uns. Warned off a couple of neanderthals when I put my colours on.
They never let me buy a drink after the game at the central station either and half carried me to my bus back to Buxton.
So while my memories of Newcastle folk are obviously not as entwined as yours, they're not too bad. :P

That penalty was propelled so slowly the keeper actually stepped forward to collect it.

As for Burnley's goal words fail me,

'My ticket had me with the Mags on the big open end'

Heard that from a few posters and wondered how it happened. There were Newcastle fans in our end but they'd acquired them when we failed to sell out or possibly just Newcastle fans living in or around Burnley. I'm supposing you got yours from Turf Moor too but unusual for them to be in the opposite end.

Mine was a Turf Moor issue. My Grandad got it for me from a shop in Rawtenstall. A guy called Billinge, I think. Had them off him a few times. As far as I ever knew, he was legit and was a sort of agent for BFC.
His shop was the bottom of Bank St towards Bacup Rd.

The Burnley team on that day in Jan.'54 included a player who is now 94 years young and is, in fact, our oldest living ex-Claret............Can anyone name him ?

52,011.

And still some two thousand less than the Cup match against Liverpool in 1952 in the link just posted on another thread. I think the 54,031 for that match will be the highest since the record was set against Huddersfield in 1924.

Think you might mean Roland Billington who had a shop near to the 'Queens' pub. We occasionally got our season tickets from there(I lived in Haslingden when I was at junior school) and as far as I recall his was probably one of the only shops that remained open on Christmas Day(50's and early60's)

Their equaliser wouldn’t have stood now for handball. We wuzz robbed.
I thought ours might have taken a deflection off their 6 but the keeper was still shocking.

Jock Aird indeed, claretfern.

Jock was a good player for us and made 143 appearances between 1948 and 1955. In that year of the link in the OP, 1954, he also made 4 appearances for Scotland in the World Cup and I believe he was our first ever Scottish international. In 1955 he left us and emigrated to New Zealand and somehow managed to play for that country on a couple of occasions. I think he remains our only player to have been capped for two different countries.

Back in our ClaretsMad days ClaretTony produced a fitting profile of Jock Aird and noted that he returned for a visit to the UK in 2009 when, as an 83 year old, he made the half-time draw on the Turf against Birmingham in our first season back in the Prem. I understand he is now living in Australia and is now 94 years young and, as you say, is our oldest living ex-Claret.
