Who are the ESSENTIAL workers?

Post by Mala591 » Thu Mar 19, 2020 10:13 am

All NHS staff
Those involved in the food supply chain
Those involved in the clean water supply chain
Those involved with the supply of heat and light and electricity
Those involved with the supply of petrol and diesel fuel
Those involved in the basic sanitary products chain
Those involved with the provision of local/national public transport
The delivery drivers
Those involved in the manufacture and supply of medicines

These 'essential life support' workers should imo be the best paid in our society

Do we need anything/anyone else to stay alive at a basic level of subsistence?

I would suggest Gordaleman who's tireless work on this forum is really not fully appreciated as much as it perhaps should be.

Agree with this but you missed out people involved in radio/TV, internet and telecommunications as that is pretty vital for people keeping informed and keeping in touch with loved ones if they have to stay in. It's not life essential but without proper communication we cannot keep abreast of things and make sure family are okay. Otherwise agree with all of the above.

I’d like to nominate “ Lowbankclaret” due to his tireless unstinting dedication in the face of adversity to not only find a cure but to instruct the nation on the hows ,what’s ant why’s of Covid . If he wasn’t already sent down from God I’d also have nominated him for an award .

NHS Maintenance staff, my teams are out there keeping Ambulances safe and maintained; we do this 365(6) days of the year. We need to keep our staff, patients and other road users safe.

Just highlights how many people are needed to support key workers

Totally agree with you. I think the news programmes should just REPORT what is essential and stop sitting there looking glum and doing 'reports' on how it is affecting people, showing empty streets and empty shelves, we KNOW what is going on, we don't need a dramatic portrayal. And maybe they should start giving people more confidence by reporting the numbers who have got over it fine instead of just the numbers of sufferers and deaths piling up. The fact is people ARE getting over it, some with nothing more than a bad cold, so let's have a bit less of the doom and gloom and a little more of the good news that is out there, because it IS out there. FFS if there was ever a time for some confidence and positivity that time is now, more than ever.

Police and other emergency services too.
There has been little mention of them during this but from what I here they have been told they will be the last people to be stood down or told to work from home (other than hospital / NHS staff of course)

In terms of NHS staff i believe they are already looking at a significant redeployment of staff to focus on this - I know that is not news in terms of cancelling non urgent operations etc but they are looking at other areas in addition to this which should become clearer in the next few days / weeks.

Doctors and nurses, thank god we haven't made any recent political decision which have seen their numbers drop through either funding or a hostile immigration environment.

Same goes for young working age people who are willing to do basic but essential jobs.

Yep - the “silver economy”.
Unpaid for looking after millions of babies and children whilst we go to work. The country would fall apart without them - I know for sure my family would have been stuffed without them when our kids were young.
My wife was on nights at the hospital when we had our first child and I worked in Manchester - I honestly cannot remember how I got to work in the mornings when my wife was working as my daughter did not sleep through until she was at least one - but I do know that without the grandparents it would have been impossible for us to have those same jobs for the 4 or 5 years before school.

Seriously - they should be paid for this. Not that they would ever ask for money but indirectly they contribute massively to the economy.

This has been true since the stone age, it's nothing new.
Dad goes off to hunt, Mum goes off to gather berries. Leave the kids with those too old to hunt or gather, you get some food for helping to enable the productive ones. That's called your pension today.

The point was that if we weren't here to look after them you wouldn't have as many doctors and nurses to fight the virus nothing to do with being paid.

In the past two days I’ve been back in work, I’ve probably come into ‘contact’ with 50 people at calls. And this is with Met CCC trying to screen out calls.

The advice to keep your distance is completely impractical for us. Two colleagues of mine went to report a sudden death of an elderly lady today who had self isolated, and was showing symptoms. They had nothing to protect themselves with, and no procedure or protocol was in place with LAS.

We’ve no masks, not that they would be much use, and there’s already 3 members of my team self isolating with symptoms. One lad’s Dad is in hospital and not doing too great.

There’s been a force mobilisation today to try and deal with pockets of disorder springing up across London. Rumour of a ‘lockdown’ coming soon.

There are no ambulances. At all. If you’re in cardiac arrest, you may get one, but that’s about it.

Across the Command Unit, we are already 25% under strength, and this is before coronavirus REALLY starts to take hold of frontline officers.

I’ll admit that for the first time in my 13 year career in the Police, I’m concerned.

That’s sad to hear Tsar. Hope it works out.
One of my family is a detective in north wales and she is carrying on as “normal”....although nothing is of course normal at the moment. She is out on esponse at the moment.
Given the vast majority of incidents / crimes are connected to either drugs / alcohol and domestic abuse then these are still as high as ever so that part of the world carries on.
As I’m sure you know better than me the massive cuts in resources during the last 10 years in all the support networks in addition to the cuts in policing mean they often end up fulfilling all these roles aswell as doing the job of policing !

I got my hair cut this morning. Hairdresser says she will have no earnings when all her appointments "dry up" next week - she's self-employed. Many customers have already been cancelling. She said she'd cut my hair shorter than usual, so it will last longer. I made an appointment for 5 weeks time and she's taken a note of my phone so she can call to cancel/let me know when they are finally closed down.

Hairdressers are, of course, not essential workers. We will all be looking like hippies in the late 60s again when this thing is all over. ;)

Some places declaring themselves essential really aren't. I work for one of them trying to squeeze in under a category when that's really not what is meant.
