We do not have the luxury of outrage.
I have mentioned in the past about troll culture, bipolar politics and keyboard warriormanship has slowly been eroding our sense of community.
Now more than ever the party politics needs to stop, the picking and choosing of facts to fit one's own narrative (or more likely some other persons narrative).
I don't hace anything I want from you, I don't have anything to sell you, nor do I have a doctrine I want you to ascribe to.
I just want the bickering and impatient "discourse" to stop. We need to put aside our millions of differences and get along enough to survive.
If we are to go into lockdown this (the Internet) becomes our only means to socialise, the bad habits I outlined at the start were mitigated somewhat by the logic that these people would never act like this face to face in actual social situations. 18 months of people living inside their bubble of information, not thinking to check multiple sources will hurt us as a whole immeasurably. A distrust of our political opponents will hinder us pulling together. Trolling over the Internet in a lockdown scenario is going to be considered a crime most heinous. Finally the conspiracies surrounding this need to go away sharpish. One states that there is no such thing as covid19. This misinformation, seemingly amplified by Russian bots is going to cost many lives. Our right to publish as individuals over the Internet is going to come into question over the next few months and it is for the reasons I outlined above.
Yeah I'm in full on lecture mode, sorry about that, probably the nerves.
So ill finish: for phukks sake drop the political rivalry, drop the cynicism and keep your right to be heard, or lose it.
Stay safe guys and non binaries and girls.

Re: We do not have the luxury of outrage.
An odd OP.
Surely, it's especially times like these where not only the issue of the virus and all its aspects are discussed but also the widerimplications for society ? Hence, of course, the politicising of matters, it's difficult not to. This is where people will fall out but, yes, you're right about the constant trolling from certain individuals. Wider issues, however troubling, do need to be discussed, though.
It was a shame, for instance, that one of the most interesting philosophical debates we've had on here regarding eugenics was pulled yesterday - I only read the first few contributions, including my own, but by the afternoon it had gone. There will be some pretty fundamental questions to be addressed when all this is over.
The one that's troubling me at the moment is that, sadly for them, the newly-unemployed will find that attempting to live off the £73/week Universal Credit and/or £94 Statutory Sick Pay isn't the "scroungers'"cushy number they used to sneer at.
Strange times.

Hopefully the government will be announcing a substantial employment and wage package today which will have a major impact in mitigating the risk of unemployment.evensteadiereddie wrote: ↑Fri Mar 20, 2020 8:27 amAn odd OP.

Re: We do not have the luxury of outrage.
OP is saying (I think) that useful, informed debate is constantly descending into ego-driven **** slinging and point scoring at the expense of the reasoned debate of available information and honest opinions are not tolerated. That, my friends, is 21st century social media for you. I rarely engage in online debate as its pointless in affecting real life outcomes when opinions are derided and facts suppressed/denied/logically twisted and egos dominate over logical discussion.

I don't think we can call what goes on here over every issue , and it's minutia, a political examination though.
We now have an age where people are choosing their facts and unless something is done to stop this we could come out of lockdown in a couple of years with such a massive chasm in our view of reality.
I think the digital passport is going to be introduced, and will be a requirement for anyone to post anything online, this will help the trolling from within our shores.
Though, I have long since suspected the presence of bots and or foreign actors on this site here only to troll. A digital passport would solve this.

Exactly that, I open threads hoping to read something informative and close it because of the same 6-8 idiots arguing and ruining it by point scoring.jollyjack wrote: ↑Fri Mar 20, 2020 10:27 amOP is saying (I think) that useful, informed debate is constantly descending into ego-driven **** slinging and point scoring at the expense of the reasoned debate of available information and honest opinions are not tolerated. Aye - answering the idiotic, cowardly, trolling pricks such as yourself.
If people choose to interrupt threads by deliberately misinterepreting what I say then, frankly, they can **** right off.
There are about five people who do it on a regular basis and one of them has even been banned for making homophobic comments. But, hey, let's not mention them, eh ?
If I'm trolled, I'll fight back and/or report it. Deal with it.

Re: We do not have the luxury of outrage.
I will not be drawn into that detail as it I cannot prove it and I might be wrong. But I do suspect it. It's happening in a lot of places people go to chat online, and well documented.
The reason I suspect it is because the end result of the interaction is always the same, slanderous mud slinging from all directions.
And its not like its some of the time, its become the norm.
We. Need. To. Stick. Together. Please?!
