Diego Maradona
Diego Maradona
Channel 4 are showing the documentary about him at 9 o clock tonight. I haven't seen all of it yet so I'll definitely be watching. Mainly covers his time at Napoli so I'm guessing all the drug taking and his links with the Mafia will be covered.
Like him or loathe him he had a hell of a career. How good would he have been in today's era where defenders are no longer allowed to kick lumps out of forwards?

Re: Diego Maradona
Watched it on my flight out to Vegas last year and thought it was superb. Maradona is my favourite player of all time but there were loads of interesting stuff Id never seen before and thought it was put together brilliantly.
Well worth a watch for all footy fans no matter what you think of the man himself

Yes its a brilliant film.
Re: Diego Maradona
Same - watched it on a plane and could happily have gone back to the start and watched it again. The Napoli footage is absolutely brilliant.
Re: Diego Maradona
Brilliant footballer but broke my heart in 86. Laughed my head off in 94 though...
Re: Diego Maradona
Thanks for the notification. I've put it onto record as I'll end up falling asleep in the chair with it being on for two and a half hours, I'll watch it early doors, probably next week.

Incredibly gifted footballer. Great leader too as exemplified by his role in leading his country to winning the World Cup in '86.

Can't condone what he did. Unfortunately the modern game is littered with cheats and no one seems to care anymore.

I think the frustrating thing is seeing the best in the world do it when they don’t need to, as his second goal showed.

Had to log in just to say to Steve:
That is one of the most ridiculous posts I have ever seen.
Whatever you may think about Maradonna as a person, he makes Cantona look like a pub player in comparison.
He won the World Cup dragging an average team behind him for goodness sake and got to the Final again four years later with another mostly average team. Add to that all his other achievements.
Cantonna?
You’re having a laugh.

Re: Diego Maradona
It’s quite apparent he struggled dealing with the pressures. People forget that with footballers. Money doesn’t make the brain ignore. Many have succumb to the pressures down the years. Many have had different ways of dealing with it. The pressure of a nation the pressure of a city all on you. Argentina don’t win, Napoli don’t win it’s on him. His fault.

Got to admire him for carrying Napoli all on his own.. A great footballer who was one of the best in the world.. If he played for England and had fisted the ball in the net and got away with it nobody would have give a flying ****..

Green eyed??
Not sure what you mean?
I thought Cantona was a great player and loved watching him and so much more entertaining than some of the “stars” of today.
In purely footballing terms however, Maradonna was on a completely different level to just about any player before or since barring one or two obvious names. And this from a still bitter England fan!

Re: Diego Maradona
He was a fabulous player (and a cheat), but this programme is a bit tedious.
Its overlong and just seems padded out with shots of him walking in and out of hotels and press conferences.
Some good game footage, but could have been condensed into an hour.
At over two and a half hours, it ran out of steam half an hour ago.
But yes, an all time great.

Re: Diego Maradona
Very good film. He was obviously a very special footballer but got involved with the wrong crowd. I don’t resent him for the handball, if he was an England player we’d laud him as a hero. Wish there were more players like him in today’s game.

He'd have trouble with the drug testing regime.
I'd be happy with there being more players with that amount of skill. But I don't wish there were more players like him. I'm sure we have more than our fair share of knobs in the game already without introducing a load of gigaknobs.

what VAR was invented for!
Re: Diego Maradona
Is it just me or was the technical level slightly higher back then in football? Today's game is a lot faster but a lot of the players just seem to be athletes. On old footage I see it seems like every player is really comfortable on the ball. I suppose this might be down to the game being slower and having a bit more time?
