Today's Times. Burnley least Woke place.
Today's Times. Burnley least Woke place.
In the annual supplement in today's Sunday Times, the best places to live, Burnley is one of 3 least woke places. We are least likely to own an electric car, and are the least charitable people in the UK, based on online charity giving sites.

I always find Burnley people to be very generous in their charity giving, but maybe like me they don't don't do much online.

It will be charity value, it goes without saying that as a town we have less to give than most, but what we do have I’d say we are no different to anywhere else.

What other criteria were used, Siddo ?
The electric car thing and not giving as much to charities come as no surprise.

I first heard someone say 'tight as a Burney wallet' about 10 years ago. I'd never come across the expression before and didn't realise we had a reputation for being tight. It's probably more to do with low wages and people not having as much disposable income as some of the more affluent parts of the north west.

Burnley had the lowest percentage of the population identifying as "non-binary" at just 14.7%evensteadiereddie wrote: ↑Sun Mar 22, 2020 9:03 pmWhat other criteria were used, Siddo ?

I’d be surprised if there’s 14 people in the town identifying as non binary
Re: Today's Times. Burnley least Woke place.
Like a lot of the pennine mill towns, it’s positive in that people are grounded and straightforward generally but if you’re camp or outlandish it must feel very restrictive.

I used to own a shop in Nelson. We had two charity boxes.nil_desperandum wrote: ↑Sun Mar 22, 2020 8:45 pmI always find Burnley people to be very generous in their charity giving, but maybe like me they don't don't do much online.
When the boxes were collected we received a note back from the charity saying thank you etc plus the amount collected - we were always one of the most charitable giving shops in the north of England.

Maybe but I though you were proud of the fact that Burnley folk were some of the least generous and most insular.

I'd have thought that Burnley should be a net beneficiary of handouts rather than some kind of philanthropic utopia.
The place is on it's arse for heaven's sake...most of it looks like the aftermath of a roadside bomb.

No, to be fair, the post you answered and claimed to be proud of was concerning electric car sales and charity giving with no mention of gender classification - that came a few posts later. Whatever.
You don't accept non binary terms - good. Neither do I.

Bang on the money, Fatboy. You'd hardly expect philanthropy or forward thinking from such a crater, to be fair.

Does non-binary mean they don't use 1s and 0s?

Just looked up 'woke'. I have never really known it's meaning. I thought it was an acronym. It's just yet another Amreicanism isn't it? Oh well.

Re: Today's Times. Burnley least Woke place.
I suspect 60% of the Burnley Adult population, would look at a pollster in utter bemusement if they were asked in the street, " Do you currently identify as non-binary ? " My Dad's 84, and thinks LBGT is a new variant on a Bacon, Lettuce and Tomato Sandwich ...
A 5 door Electric Vauxhall Corsa, starts at £30,665 ( £27,665 with the Govt grant ), and people wonder why Burnley's streets aren't littered with them ? You can get a 68 Plate Corsa 1.4 SRI ( Nav ) with 10k on it for £8,299 at Motorpoint !!

And how has the Times arrived at this conclusion? I'd be interested to know if it was a poll or not. As we have learnt over the recent past they are so, so accurate.

Not too surprising. Most folk in Burnley are down to earth, get on with things without a fuss and are less likely to broadcast good deeds that they do or offence at things.

Re: Today's Times. Burnley least Woke place.
I suppose the thing about charity giving is that it depends how you define "charitable". The Sunday Times obviously believes that a man with £50,000 who gives £100 via the internet is more generous than a man with £25,000 who gives £100 in cash. I don't see it, myself.
Is it rocket science that richer areas with higher proportion of non-cash transactions, do more online spending on everything than poorer areas with more cash transactions? (I suspect the Sunday Times doesn't realise there's a difference between North and South).

Maybe those who ran the survey should have come to BUrnley to see a home game and the food bank collection, the work that the Salvation Army do and all the other charitable work that goes on here.

So you have to be woke and believe in non binary to be a good person who is charitable and decent?

A guy at my work turns up in a dress. He is competent which is all I care about. I still find it very odd which I guess makes me not woke. Least I can blame my Burnley roots.

Exactly i'll wager the writers and researchers have never set foot in Burnley, they probably couldn't even find the town on a map.
Re: Today's Times. Burnley least Woke place.
Course they could. It's somewhere north of Watford, near Scotland. Doesn't really matter where. It all looks grim and they are proud that they've never been there to see it. Went to Luton Airport once, though, to get a cheap flight to marbs.

Hey and I bet he manages to look better than half the ladies. But one of the reasons I am not woke is I live by a few principles of the men in my life who raised me. One being an arsehole is for shiting out of only and the only set of ******** you should be playing with is a ladies top set.Stanbill05 wrote: ↑Mon Mar 23, 2020 6:00 pmA guy at my work turns up in a dress. Primitive but I believe them to be true. Doesn't make me hate anyone but these are my values so accept them as I accept some folk are different to me.
