I actually really hope I’m selected. In a very good position to help and have been telling myself for years I need to get myself signed up to helping in some way weather that be by charity or what not

I'm not sure yet but having filled in the application form it appears that one of the possibilities is being on the end of the phone to talk to someone, possibly an isolated elderly person, maybe similar to Samaritans.
This might be a possibility for some of the people on here who think their health may preclude them from helping.

Pimlico - yes that is one of the options on the website but when it came up filling out the form and choosing which roles you were prepared to do I can’t remember whether the call centre one was there ?

Signed up as a volunteer in my local village last week. A local woman had popped a home printed flyer in my letter box which gave a number to contact if I needed any help with items- like the NHS list. I did not need help but contacted the woman and offered to help as well. She said she was overwhelmed as 41 other people responded offering to also help in the space of a couple of days. No doubt she will coordinate with the NHS list.

Brilliant to see communities pulling together and people are, by and large, very decent

Could I also remind anyone who is a blood donor, current or lapsed, or thinking about doing for that matter, they're desperate and have been all but lost in the white noise of the virus.

Can you volunteer on a one day a week (plus weekends)
basis?

I'm currently working from home 4 days a week but would be happy to help out on my day off which is a Friday usually but sometimes Monday.

You can make yourself available as and when. Its run via an app and when you are available, you mark yourself as 'on duty'. If you can only do one day a week or even an hour thats fine.

Is there an upper age limit for volunteers?

Details on GoodSam website:

Volunteers must be 18 or over, and fit and well with no symptoms. Those in higher-risk groups (including those over 70, those who are pregnant or with underlying medical conditions) will be able to offer support by telephone.

Your safety is our priority. The majority of tasks can be undertaken while social distancing and volunteers will receive guidance through our 'getting started pack'. If you do become ill you can pause your volunteering.

Patient transport drivers will require an enhanced DBS check and will receive guidance to do this role safely, also included within the 'getting started pack'.

It seems even "higher-risk" groups can volunteer to help - providing support by telephone.

Excellent point I've been meaning to donate for a while,i'm not certain whether you have to make an appointment,or you can just visit,people are probably better checking with their local blood bank first,as obviously they will want to observe social distance protocols,but you are right blood is always in demand.Of course if you're suffering from a cold/flu you generally are encouraged to wait until those symptoms have cleared,and clearly given the CV they'll probably be strict on this.

Sadly, I'd love to give blood but mine is deemed unsafe for donation

Think I’ll have a go. At 65 (but fit and healthy) I might be on the phones (bit like work really) but all helps. For temporary technical reasons I can’t actually work at home for about 3-4 weeks so sat here being paid for nothing so this might make me useful.

I think that all donation sessions are appointment only, my next one is 23rd April at fire station go to the nhs blood website to make anappointment, they will be a few months away though.

I’ve had an email this morning to say that due to the high number of volunteers, it is taking 2-7 days to confirm identities and that they aren’t scheduling any work before the 31st March.

Lucky ( up to now ) , there are only 32 known cases in Shropshire . We've volunteered/organized to transport the nurses between hospitals in shrewsbury and Telford plus bring the dialysis patients to renal from all over the country .

I volunteered tuesday too but at the moment i have just come down with a cold( i hope) so have to self isolate incase its more. but can do phone calls no problem just waiting for approval.

I've had this e-mail as well. Not surprising it's taking a few days, well over half a million volunteers now.

I got mine today and downloaded the app but it’s quite confusing what to do next (to me at least)

They have used an old app rather than build a new one as there is stuff on there from a cardiac responders volunteer scheme.

Anyone who has sussed it out any advice would be appreciated
