Round 6 – The Race to the Play-Offs!
We won with virtually the last kick of the game against Charlton on 31st January to break that losing streak and would only lose another two games all season. Following the defeat against Spurs in the cup the players were visibly steeled to make amends and get to Wembley.
The biggest improvement in the side came when the defence suddenly bucked their ideas up. We’d always been great going forward but the form of our centre-backs, captain Steven Caldwell and Clarke Carlisle, was the real catalyst that saw us push into the play-offs.
1. At a Bloomfield Road ground consisting of only 2 stands, and open to all the elements of the Irish sea on the other 2 sides, we won 1-0. Which defender scored his one and only goal for Burnley on that blustery night?
[1 point]
2. Jay Rodriguez won our goal of the season with the fifth and final goal of a 5-0 home win on 14th March. Which team did we beat?
[1 point]
3. We needed to win to ensure we reached the play-off on the final day of the season. A comfortable 4-0 win against Bristol City meant that was never in doubt.
The team above us lost and dropped two places to miss out on the play-offs – replaced by ourselves and perennial play-off bridesmaids Preston North End.
Who was the team that missed out?
[1 point]
4. Our penultimate game of the season was a 2-2 draw away from Turf Moor which sealed the relegation of the home team. Their fans reacted rather badly and set about dismantling their own ground. Which team had we relegated?
[1 point]
5. As the season reached the business end, a sell-out away end from the travelling Burnley fans meant that the “Clarets Mad” poster who had promised to write the guest match report could only get in the home end. Believe me when I say it, Rowls was not happy about sitting with the opposition fans.
A silver lining – the team in question is a great place for pubs. Some of the fine pubs close(ish) to the ground include – The Alexandra Hotel, The Station Inn, The Smithfield, The Exeter Arms, Ye Olde Dolphin Inne and The Brunswick Inn.
Can you name the away team from the pubs listed?

Both correct Stevie2112!
Well done, thought that pub question might stump a few but I suppose if you look out for the real ale pubs these are all ones you'd know from following the Clarets over the past 7 or 8 seasons

Wasn’t captain but played right back. Aryn’s twin brother is Ryan at Portsmouth.

Hahaha! I gather you're a health-minded individual these days too - very commendable - so I thought you might not know the pubs! You've got a silght advantage because somewhere at the back of your mind you might remember who wrote those guest reports!ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sat Mar 28, 2020 9:15 pmI just guessed at Derby because it was a short trip for you
The other advantage you have is that you know more than most ....

Round 7 – The Play-Offs!
After a roller coaster season we’d reached the play-offs. For the first time since Jimmy Mullen’s Claret & Blue Armada won in 1994 we were in with a chance of making it to Wembley.
Our opponents were 4th placed Reading had been relegated from the Premier League the season before. They were a very strong squad with an excellent team. In truth, they were probably a better side than us but what we had in our advantage was our amazing team spirit, a cavalier gung-ho attitude and a genuine resolve to put right the agony of our last-minute defeat in the League Cup semi-final.
1. The first leg at Turf Moor was a very close game and with both sides holding firm. Reading had the better chances and despite our flair we were struggling to break them down. Shots on goal were at a premium, but we got our opportunity when Andre Bikey fgave away a penalty for shirt-pulling just inside their box.
We all might remember Bikey’s theatricals when he was later sent off but who was the player whose shirt he pulled to concede the penalty?
[1 point]
2. The second leg was pure and simple football heaven for the Burnley fans who were lucky enough to get tickets. After withstanding a full-scale Reading barrage in the first half we responded with two goals of ineffable brilliance. First from Martin Paterson then, eight minutes later, from Steven Thompson.
But who was the goalkeeper for Reading who could do so little to prevent the shots from going in and what is his nationality?
[2 points]
3. The play-off final was a one-sided affair and, although we rode our luck, we could have (and maybe should have) scored at least a couple more goals.
The performances that day of Sheffield United’s two young full-backs helped keep them in the game. Can you name them both?
[2 points]
4. Sheffield United had a strong shout for a penalty in the second half when many thought Christian Kalvenes had committed a foul.
Blades manager Kevin Blackwell had, with typical sagacity, chosen to criticize the appointment of the referee before the game but this surely this did not influence his decision-making.
Who was the referee in question?
[1 point]
5. Two Sheffield United players were sent off that day, one after the final whistle. Can you name them both?
[2 points]

Re: Burnley Quiz - Saturday 28th March @ 8:30pm - "The 2008/09 Season"
I wouldn’t have had a clue on the pubs so that was no help.
To be honest I worked back on the away games. You’d mentioned the last two so with knowing you lived in that area I went for the third last.
Thanks a lot for doing the quiz. I’ll look at setting one or two next week.

Re: Burnley Quiz - Saturday 28th March @ 8:30pm - "The 2008/09 Season"
OK, it's getting late so gonna post the final round too...
Round 8 – The Season in General
What a year it was! Definitely the most exciting and eventful I’ve experienced as a Burnley fan. Not quite my favourite season and, since the arrival of Sean Dyche, it is no longer the best Burnley side I’ve seen either.
In fact, I’d wager our current side would pull apart our 2009 defence any day of the week – just as we witnessed on a regular basis during that ill-fated single season in the Premier League sun.
The memories are tainted somewhat by the realization that the man who masterminded it all, a certain Owen Columba Coyle, was a lying little toad. And a disreputable one at that.
Take nothing away from what he achieved with his gambling though. Had we not been promoted we’d have been in deep financial trouble and it doesn’t bare thinking about where we might have ended up. But Burnley were promoted and the gamble paid off.
Let’s have five final questions to round us off!
1. Who were our shirt sponsors for the 2008/09 season?
[1 point]
2. We played a staggering 61 games that season. One player played in every game and one player in every game bar one (60 games). Who were they?
[2 points]
3. Britain was in the grip of X-Factor mania at the time. What contrived X-Factor single was the Christmas number one in 2008?
[2 points]
4. Most of us will have been at Wembley on the day but which ex-professional footballer provided the Sky punditry during the commentary?
Clue: His notable ex-clubs include – Bradford, West Brom, Sunderland, Wolves, Motherwell & Walsall
[1 point]
5. Following on from that, can you name the three pundits who were in the studio that day?
Clue 1: One is an irritable and dislikeable Scotsman
Clue 2: One is an ex-Sunderland striker
Clue 3: One is an ex-winger who always seems to have a soft spot for us
[3 Points]

Well played everybody who played along.
Hope it kept you amused for a short period.
The obscure answers that nobody (not even CT) got are:
* The two traillists on our pre-season were - Gatis Kalnins (You definitely get a point for that one CT) and Aleksandrs Solovjoys
* The manager of Watford town this season (at least when we played there) was Brendan Rodgers - Can't recall if anyone got that right?

Same for me.
One of the very best seasons - definitely the most dramatic but I think the Championship season would have to be my all time favourite.
But what a season!

His favourite player is Adam Blacklaw, followed very closely by Brian Easton.

Re: Burnley Quiz - Saturday 28th March @ 8:30pm - "The 2008/09 Season"
One great memory was a coach we got together as family and friends and friends of friends. 6 am from Rawtenstall, tea, biscuits, a quiz, video of the season and a promise from the driver to be parked up at 11am. Kept his promise and we were the first coach from Burnley in as the gates to the coach park opened. Down into town where we found the 'Speakeasy' bar and liquid refreshment(and one of the bars that supplied Holland's pies on the day). As I get older there are some things that regrettably I forget but to be with family on that day is something I will never tire of re-living.
