Macclesfield defender, Efe Sodje, British born to a Nigerian family and a controversial figure in these games, was jailed in September 2017 for fraud, illegally siphoning money from a charitable foundation ...

I think we must be one of only a few clubs who never had a Sodje there were so many of them

Remember I walked to that game with my cousin and his wife from Haslingden. Can't recall why but probably for a charity. Got a.lift back home,thankfully.

Remember the match well and Tom Cowan's celebration in front of us must be one of the best I've seen. A right roller coaster of a game. There was never a dull moment under Stan.

Remember the game but for some reason I’d completely forgotten him. Had an outstanding game. But apart from that game I can’t remember Much else about Cowan

Not much else to remember to be honest. Never established himself in the team. Played all the remaining games that season but hardly featured in the following season after which he was released.

latter on loan from Stockport, had made debuts in the previous home game which had ended in a somewhat undeserved 1-0 win against Preston.
Shouldn't that read "undeserved 1-0 defeat against Preston???

I was a steward that day in the BL stand, right where Cowan did his celebration! Happy day, in the end...as you say, Tony, despair had set in at 0-2...

To think we had to play against dross like that on a regular basis and that we were relegation rivals.
In truth, the team that day (with all of Stan's new signings) were far superior to Macclesfield but rot that had taken hold after the Waddle season took forever to clear.
Thank goodness for Kilby and Ternent.

Paul Cook was probably Stan's best signing, with all the other signings he was the one that got them all playing.

It says John Williamson came on and replaced Cowan. Was he a youth team player? I've no memory of him

Re the game at Macclesfield when Andy Cook was sent off, for elbowing Sodge. I was in their Lounge after the game, when Sodge came in and spoke to a man, stood next to me. Sodge was asked if his face hurt after the elbow he received. Sodge looked at him and smiling said" he never touched me". My first thought was to say something to him, but being a guest, I kept quiet. A few minutes later the Burnley players came in, followed by Stan, who knows me well.
I gave it a minute or two, while Stan mingled with folk, then walked over to him and told him what I heard Sodge say. Stan didn't say anything, probably thinking out his next words, then walked over to him and they moved to one side to speak. He came back over to me and said Sodge told him, he had been elbowed by Cook and there was nothing he could do now.
Stan doesn't like cheats and he wouldn't have forgot Sodge in a hurry.

Central defender in the reserves, but it was to be his only first team appearance. He was with us for another three years but never went on to play for anyone else.

I believe Paul Cook was Stan's best signing and had the opportunity to tell that to Stan. He didn't agree though, Stan told me his best signing was Kevin Ball.

I really liked Cowan. I couldn’t understand why he struggled to get to in the team. I sat next to one of Stans sons at Chesterfield and he told me Tom was never fit. Some sort of back problem.

I'd agree 100% with you there Tony. Without Cook I don't think we'd have stayed up, his signing coincided with a good run which kept us up and created the platform for the following season. We needed his experience and was technically a very good player.

I'm convinced we'd have gone down had we not signed Paul Cook. Outstanding player and just what we needed at the time in the midfield.

Maybe it's just me, I always thought of Paul Cook as a " lower league " Gary McAllister, even looked a bit like him, and I mean that as a compliment !!

Cooky was 32 by the time we signed him and he'd played a lot of games in the top two divisions by then. McAllister was a very good player.
