One of those afternoons when you weren't too disappointed about the late equaliser, just getting back to your car in one piece was enough :D

I was gutted they equalised. Looked well offside as well!

Who was our keeper that day?

Pretty sure it was Gavin Ward. On loan from Bolton. Memorable as I think it was the last time I went to Maine Road.

Our 'keeper was indeed Gavin Ward.

Still disappointed for Cooke that his screamer didn’t stand.

Fine cross from Smith.

Brilliant when Cooke scored I front of the Burnley.

However the main memory from the day was walking out of the low roofed away end to 100's of city fans, turning right towards the carpark for coaches--was lively

Firstly, it was clearly offside, shown on the TV that weekend and it is an awful decision from the linesman not to flag.

Ward it was in goal, the team was: Gavin Ward, Chris Scott, Matt Heywood, Brian Reid, Gordon Armstrong, Glen Little, Rune Vindheim (Carl Smith), Mark Robertson, Paul Smith, Andy Cooke, Andy Payton.

We were sat in the scaffolding in the corner that day. I was with my next door neighbour who had suffered a stroke a few years earlier, and my 13 year old nephew. Both of them were frightened to death when we came out and straight into the trouble.

Never felt as intimidated at a football ground before or since.

Good result though considering the team we turned out

Sat in the home end and, on that particular day, we’re probably safer for it.

That defence! “Seive” is the word that comes to mind.

Paul Smith had a lovely left didn’t he ?
Thought he was a really talented player who would go on to play for a big club. Was he linked with Arsenal at some point ?

Played against him a couple of years ago against Burnley Veterans and he was pinging left foot passes 60 yards to feet and scored a great left foot shot from 25 yards out.

Can’t beat watching a good left winger in full flow - they just seem to have something natural about them and the way they strike the ball etc

Which was the year we were in the “ Gene Kelly” stand ? Could of sworn it was that game ? Mental outside that day after the match

If I recall correctly, he struggled with knee injuries towards the end of his time with the Clarets and ended up going out on loan somewhere. He also fell down a manhole at one point, which can't have helped.

It was strange what happened to Smith. From what I recall though he wasn't the fastest and could be a bit powder puff. Looking back at his appearances he was still involved a bit in the Championship in the 2000/01 season which is surprising as I think his best form was probably under Heath several years earlier.

Didn't he fall did an open manhole or something ridiculous like that?

Vindheim’s debut that day. We saw him legging it for the team coach which was setting off at the same time as the supporters’ coach we were on from The Turf.

Remember the City fans trying to join us in the corner stand near the end of the game, was a lively walk back to the centre

One of those games of which I had no memory ... However, as Shaun Goater received the pass and bore down on goal, I knew exactly what would happen .... somethings never change !! Peach of a cross from Paul Smith, for Cookie's goal ...

edit : Just realised, it was my sister's wedding that day, that's why I didn't recall the game ...

Smith was never the same after his first injury. Not only did he lose that explosive bit of pace over the first yard, he never looked as confident and as you said, Chorlton, a "bit powder puff".

But he certainly wasn't when he burst on the scene. Sometimes we don't appreciate what kind of injuries footballers are carrying - sometimes for all of, or the majority of their careers.

Watch this clip of Smith before his injury:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tCl9H0tlfk&t=1s

If he'd stayed injury free I've no doubt he'd have been a very good top-flight player.

Pretty lively outside straight after. Garnerssoap played a blinder when we were about to get nicked for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Lined up against a wall guarded by a police dog handler, thankfully it kicked off a few yards further up the street. At this point the handler had to politely ask us to stay where we were whilst he dealt with it and in an early bit of crucial legal advice Garnerssoap instructed us to ‘leg it’.

We'd travelled with Colne Clarets. I remember being on the coach after the game waiting to set off, and this numpty city fan, with his boy of no more than 3 years old on his shoulders, going berserk at us. His kid was crying his eyes out, but the numpty couldn't have cared less.

I parked on a school playground right next to the ground cost a fiver but such a relief to get back to it. Me and my friends hid our scarves and shirts and talked to each other with that annoying Manc drawl to blend in.

I remember getting kept in the ground after and when we did leave there was a line of police with the locals fighting with them and throwing bottles over the line. We walked past the coaches where it had just kicked off and then had to walk back to my mate's car who was a City fan. He had parked opposite the Sherwood where there was a huge mob of City surrounded by the mounted police. We had my mate's girlfriend with us, me and my brother were both holding her hand hoping it would save us from a kicking!

In the week before City had a night game with Millwall away and I think had taken a bit of kicking so they used Burnley as an opportunity to show they still had a decent mob. I believe the escort back to the city centre was a bit lively.

There was loads of bother when Millwall went up to City later that season as well.

We reminded them all through the match that Millwall had given them a pasting think that added to the post match antics.

Christ - no wonder we took some batterings that season with that defence!

Strangely, I don’t recall the bother outside.

That was because they read a letter out just before kick off from the police praising the City fans good behaviour at Millwall.
Remember some City numpties getting on the X43 at Chorlton Street threatening people with knives who then proceeded to get chased off and receive a kicking off some older Burnley meat heads! The police told the driver to turn off the sign at the front of the bus in case it got bricked driving down Deansgate!

Was in the home stands (Kippax). Came out and turned left towards the North Stand where clarets fans were coming out. Massive scrum with cans and bottles being thrown. Police dragging people into the back of the van. Happy days. Love a massive rumpus.

Spotted Rune Vindheim and remembered that he was in a critical condition a few years ago... According to Wiki, he is still the manager of some obscure Norwegian club - so I presume he made a full recovery.
