Another classic from the Division 2 days where we ended up defending under our own crossbar according to Stan.

As mentioned on the Macclesfield thread the other day, the technical ability of Paul Cook.

Walking up Brunshaw Rd after the game was a touch lively.

Seem to recall some Millwall fans trying to get in the Longside lower during the game. They then came running back into the ground as they started to pull some goals back and proceeded to start ripping seats out of the cricket field stand.

That suprised me too as Cooke and Payton were playing.

Without looking here's my guess at the team.

Crichton
Cox
Davis
Thomas
Mullin
Mellon
Cook
Cooke
Payton
Jepson

Watched it 3 hours ago, can't think who I'm missing, West , Johnrose?? Good side that. Can't remember if we used 3 centre halves and 2 wing backs. As well as Paul Cook, Mitchell Thomas was a class act.

Saw the Glen Little thread after posting so thought it must have been him, how could I forget Graham Branch!! Branchy was another big piece in the Stan's jigsaw. Like Mellon and Cook, wasn't every fans cup of tea but were very effective in their time at Burnley.

I wasn't on the game. I was in a pub in Padiham where a few older Millwall fans were drinking before the game. They said they always got to the ground 5 minutes late to avoid any trouble. Every ground they went to home fans would look to pick on any Millwall easy targets for revenge of past troubles.

Quite sad really but after the game Burnley fans ran on the train tracks chasing their train, such was the trouble that day.

I remember that game very well. After the match I told my Son to go to the loo before we left as I would not be stopping on the way home to Milton Keynes in case we bumped into any Millwall fans. No thanks Dad he said I won't need to go for a pee until we get home.

And guess what.....about halfway home my Son said that he was bursting to go for a pee so we must stop at the next service area.

So we stopped and both got out to go to the loo wearing our Burnley shirts and straight away typically we bumped into about 10 young Millwall fans. No fighting or trouble but they were delighted to tell us about the damage they had caused at the Turf.

They said that they had ripped out seats and 'joked' that it would be standing only in the cricketfield stand at our next home game.

Jeff Winter played about ten minutes injury time if I remember.

This game was Easter Saturday; two days later we won 3-2 at Brentford when we had to come from behind (twice, from memory).

Bloody hell, they put us through the mill that season.

Still my favourite away match that Brentford match for a few reasons, the main one being Ian Wright bagging in front of that tiny terrace with the stand on top behind the goal.

Slightly off topic but with Tony Warner as Millwall's goalkeeper, if you get the chance listen to his two podcasts on Magic Sponge, some great stories:

Only recall a tiny Millwall following that day , think it was day they smashed a few seats up in CFS ( v close to centre entrance/exit) and had a row with a few old Bill inside the ground . Pretty sure only a few minibuses and a coach though.

My memory is that Millwall had a big following ...were'nt they also challenging towards the top end of the table ? It felt like the last 10 minutes of the game were played in our penalty area !

Pretty sure it was the only time Millwall have brought quite a few up to Burnley.

I was talking to a couple of them in a Blackburn nightclub on the Friday night before. They said a big firm was coming up but even more were coming up the week after for a game against Preston.
I think the trouble that day made the national news if I remember rightly.

Decent away following for Millwall that day as they were pushing for the play offs.

Went to the Brentford game on the Monday as above great memory of Ian Wright scoring in front of us!

I remember that game for being the last time I saw a friend of mine alive. Andy was in his late 30s and in the full grip of MS. I saw him after the game; he was in his wheelchair, his body was physically diminishing, his speech was slurred, but his eyes were smiling. I asked him if he enjoyed the match and he told me that games like that made him feel glad to be alive. I’d been bitching to Pa Beamish on the way out about how we’d nearly thrown a four goal lead away, just before we bumped into my friend.
I didn’t moan about it after.
Andy died six months later.

Mitchell Thomas, Cox and Davis. They were such a significant upgrade on the quality of centre halves we'd endured in the years before

After the likes of Blatherwick, Lee Howey and Mark Winstanley that's not saying much! Joking aside at that level those 3 were class, didn't we get Mitchell Thomas on a free as well?

Your not wrong there.
And I always thought Thomas a real class act.
Superb positional sense & timing.

Think Luton were in big financial trouble at the time?

Chances of this being correct are statistically very high.

I’m quite friendly with a couple of Millwall lads who lets say have been around the block a few times & they remember the game well, said they brought a big firm up but were shocked how many lunatics Burnley had out that day. They said it’s always lively against Burnley home & away & have a respect for the club & town that sticks together in an old fashioned way.

I was on that day and as we crossed over by the then Wellington a Millwall fan wearing white jeans with Millwall down the legs was thrown out through the window
He had decided to invade a Home pub
A great game with tremendous atmosphere.
