Smokers !

Post by evensteadiereddie » Wed Apr 01, 2020 2:08 pm

No agenda here, just a genuine question.

If you smoke, however frequently or not, has the Covid-19 outbreak changed your attitude ? Are you now trying to give up, will give up in the future or saying along the lines of "To hell with it, if your number's up, it's up." and carrying on regardless ?

I’ll be attempting to quit shortly, when ‘normality’ resumes and I can be busy to take mind off it.

Petrified at the prospect of catching it having smoked most of my life. In a weird way it feels like payback for having not been able to shake off a horrible and unhealthy habit.

I did wonder if heavy smokers in particular would be a little more nervous than the rest. They've as much right to treatment as anybody else, of course, but I think back to one of my neighbours in Nelson as a lad. He'd got horrific chest problems but continued to smoke the strong ones all day, every day.
In the end, the consultant at Marsden Hospital told him he'd refuse to see him if he didn't stop. Drastic but it worked even though the damage was probably done.
It might be a nice side-effect of all this crap that, when it's over, quite a few folk think like you.
Anyway, Holty, good luck with your efforts to quit, stay well.

at least smokers can do something. We over 70's just have to live with it (or die from it)

It's also worth mentioning that those who like a drink or two the liver or kidneys won't be as efficient if you get the virus, thus leading to further complications.

I smoked lightly on and off for about 10 years but always wanted to quit. I've managed to stop recently using nicotine gum, it's a pretty good substitute if you give it a chance.

If they're already choosing to destroy their lungs they probably aren't too worried about coronavirus.

My mother died due to smoking aged 63. We recently lost my sister in law aged 68 due to smoking. It's hard giving up I know but I would urge anyone who smokes to get help and advice and really try and kick the habit once and for all.

Im still smoking the same amount even though I'm sat bored for 15-16 hours a day, so taking the positives from that.

I usually only have a couple of spare hours a day midweek.

One of my mates kept trying the nicotine gum but he could never get it to stay alight long enough.
