Re: ARTICLE: Second defeat in three days averted with late goal
Great article again, CT. I think I was at this match, that's hopefully not down to my age but as someone still only 7 years old at the time I'm sure my concentration wandered at times. The father of a future Sheff Wed. player at left back and of course the soon to be infamous pairing of Peter Swan and Tony Kay. And yet another classy inside left, Johnny Fantham. Some clubs are going to be disappointed come the end of the season.

Very tough and physical team at the time were Sheffield Wednesday with said left back very much one of the toughest. They had some very good players.

The referee that day Norman Hough subsequently moved to Littleborough and worked as a tackler/loom mender at the Co-op woollen blanket works whilst still refereeing.

I worked at same blanket works, Norman had to have Friday off one week, refereeing at Torquay!

I recognise the names of most of the refs during that season but I couldn’t recall Hough at all.

Some very good players in the Sheff. Wed team. I'd forgotten all about Fantham who was perhaps unlucky only to play for England on one occasion. Looked him up and he is still Wednesday's post war leading goal scorer.
Walking back home after the game, my dad was still convinced we could take the title even if it wasn't decided until the end of the season...prophetic words?

Cheers, CT. I never knew Burnley was twinned with Vitry, is that still ongoing?
I had a magnetic football game can’t confirm it was the same one.

As far as I know we are still twinned with them but it's not anything that I've ever really come across in all the years it's been going. The area between the central library and the police station/court building is known as Place de Vitry.Tricky Trevor wrote: ↑Fri Apr 03, 2020 8:06 amCheers, CT.
