Possible Premier League solution : "NRL Island"

Post by Stalbansclaret » Thu Apr 02, 2020 12:15 pm

I've been sharing a "mad" idea with friends that we could maybe test the Premier League squads, then isolate the healthy squads and staff in some kind of ring-fenced "camp" environment behind closed doors on the Isle of Man where they could play out the rest of the season at a rate of 2 or 3 (televised)matches per day.
Maybe not so barmy after all as I see the Australian rugby league competition, the NRL, are proposing pretty much exactly that , using an island off the coast of Queensland !

The article is dated 2nd April.

Certainly the NRL has been more active than most organisations in trying to find a way to lay no matter what. I'm not sure if the New Zealand Warriors would be able to take part, though, because they've gone home and might not be allowed back.

The Isle of Man isn't an equivalent, however, so that ain't going to work!

How about one of the remote islands off Scotland?

Not sure they windy conditions up there would help our direct style of play though :D

On the evidence of my time spent in the Hebrides we might struggle for a decent playing surface ! Not to mention the scattered B&Bs might struggle to accommodate the necessary 1000 or so people :-)

This has already been mentioned by the PL. a bootcamp solution in the Midlands. Not sure why location matters if they are locked down. I wouldn't want to pick up the tab.

Isn't this what St George's was built for?

There's this place, but i don't think they're welcoming visitors just now  reminds me of Craggy Island of Father Ted fame.

No risk of infecting anyone on St. Kilda. Some of the houses are a bit "in need of renovation", though.
