Sorry if this has been discussed before I left Burnley in my late teens but in early 70’s had a Sunday paper round on the then new Trafalgar flats. There were lots of people living there who had moved down from Dundee to work at the then flourishing a Michelin tyre factory. Have often wondered if in later years when the industry in the town changed did they stay or did they head back to Scotland ? Would like to hear any family stories.

Turned the flat into the Dundee version of Glasgow's gorbals.then hit the drink. Though did know a few Dundee Lads..Jimmy Langlands...went back. Jimmy young you'll see on the door at the 110 club when opened.John Quigley still about. Dont think they lived on the flats though.

Many came down from Scotland (not just Dundee), emptied the flats of their brand new kitchens and bathrooms and returned to Scotland without starting work.

Dundee had another large Michelin factory so assume that’s the Dundee link?

The flats were very modern and smart when brand new I believe. A real mistake building them though, they looked horrid in the 1980’s.

Meanwhile some working Locals Lived in slum properties with long drop toilets ..no Bathrooms..dank sculleries..rats and mice. Dont blame the Scots though.......The council of the day.

quite a few stayed, my family are all from Dundee, but arrived long before the flats. seemed odd at the time, only met Dundonians when family visited or we went north.
After the flats went up there seemed to be loads here. Suddenly had pals at school from Dundee.

Yes Michelin had plants in Burnley, Dundee, Stoke and Ballymena. Only Stoke remains now.

I moved down aged 10 to live in a slum in whittlefield. All my Dundee compatriots lived on trafalgar flats but they were far from friendly to even us fellow dundonians.
Anyway I soon settled to life as a claret and only reverted to my Scottish roots when we play England .
I left Burnley as soon as I could for job purposes and never went home . Family all buried there and I’ll always be a claret .

The artwork on that building is very impressive..unfortunatly Dundee wasnt.

Dundee is now a modern vibrant city and also a top night out.
We go up regularly our eldest lad is at Uni there.

And the biggest drug problem in scotland,I was there last year,the dock has been tarted up,dig deeper and it's a horrible place

I actually did it the other way round left Burnley and went to Dundee around 1970 to go to University. Like most places there were some nice areas and some not so nice. Was around the era of the Skinheads so you can imagine English students weren't exactly top of their list of favourites. Had an interesting evening invited to a party by the ' Hilltown Huns'! Survived to tell the tale and enjoyed my time there. Had many a happy hour at Dens Park.

My mum was born on the Hilltoon Sykoclaret, Alexander Street. they were a scary lot weren't they ?

Spent the first two years in Belmont Hall on Hawkhill. Then flats in Stobswell and Perth Road. The prostitutes used to operate from outside Greasy Pete Cabrelli's fish & chip shop on Hawkhill. Those were the days!

I agree. There was a time when Dundee, like many places who have lost an all consuming industry, struggled economically.
Today, Dundee is a modern, revitalised, techno city.

My family came down from Dundee in the 60s and I have been up there a few times, the last time in January. I find it a pleasant, small city. Went out for midweek drinks and it was vibrant with decent folk about, not like most of the alkies and smackrats you see in Burnley town centre pubs on a weekday. Some good walks around the city and looks great when the sun is bouncing off the water.

Aye, the silvery Tay is a joy to behold.

That ferry with the rigging is a bit outdated though!

Lived in Worsthorne during my formative years - hence my lifetime affliction with Burnley (trust me, it was an affliction in the 80s!).

Have lived and worked in Scotland, and West Edinburgh in particular, since 1992.

Youngest daughter (daughter of me and my ex- who is from Accrington) is a student in Dundee (and her big sister is a student in Aberdeen).

Nowt wrong with Dundee (or Aberdeen).

Yep, like all former industrial towns it has probably never ever recovered from the loss of its original boom town industries (just like Burnley) and has its sink estates with all the problems that urban deprivation involves (just like Burnley), but it is equally a place of real character with a brave new future (hopefully just like Burnley).

Been in there many a time. Still a great boozer and my favourite up there without a doubt.

Used to know a guy , Ben Storrier, from Dundee, who settled in Burnley. Supported one of the Dundonian teams and used to get mightily peed off if you got which one he supported wrong. Still, to this day , cant remember which one it was!

Didn't suffer fools kindly, great card player, called a spade a spade, straight talking and very likeable. A very sound Scotsman.
