ABBA on BBC4
ABBA on BBC4
Just don't realise how sucessful they were.
Never seem to get mentioned in the same way as the Stones, Beatles, The Who etc, but they certainly sold enough albums to justify being one of the greatest groups ever.
And they had some fantastic songs.

Some of the songs were incredibly technical.

Re: ABBA on BBC4
SOS is a brilliant song. Was it Pete Townshend who described it as the perfect pop song? I can't think of many bands where all the members are still alive that would be as big a draw if they reformed. The Jam in the UK perhaps but globally I don't think anyone could rival ABBA.

I think 'Sound Affects' is a great album but a reunion for them wouldn't even register compared to a hypothetical ABBA reunion.

Just watched, really enjoyable antidote to the current shite going on, and they're a million miles away from my usual music taste.

ABBA are great.
However, Dancing Queen is a very annoying song...I think the worst of their songs by a mile.
Pretty much all their other ones from the greatest hits compilations are fantastic.

Re: ABBA on BBC4
hang on, catchy tunes maybe, but if just the 4 of them had to perform without the enormous studios and session musicians, it would sound like a cats chorus.
it was all about vids and slick production.
I can never grasp why shite like bananarama were seen as decent, those 3 dollops couldnt do anything.
its a massive con. 99.9 % of bands never get that backing.

Would they sell so many albums if they were as poor as you say?Wile E Coyote wrote: ↑Sat Apr 04, 2020 12:07 amhang on, catchy tunes maybe, but if just the 4 of them had to perform without the enormous studios and session musicians, it would sound like a cats chorus.

They pioneered the use of multi track recording. ie They over dubbed their vocals many times to gain that unique sound. Therefore when they played live, they had to use other musicians to replicate the studio sound.

Re: ABBA on BBC4
Remember going to see ABBA The Movie as a student. It was one of the first films to use surround sound in the cinema. The start of the film is in a narrow screen with the sound just coming from the front of the cinema. There then comes a point where a music producer says “I’m going to take them ‘World Wide’”. At this point he opens his arms and the screen goes wide screen and the sound comes from all round the cinema. The rest of the film feels like you are in the crowd at one of their live concerts. As I said above, great technical innovation.
Re: ABBA on BBC4
Enjoyed listening to Agnetha on Graham Nortons radio show this morning. Still the best ever Eurovision song (Waterloo) imo of course.

Re: ABBA on BBC4
If they reformed for a gig they would make an absolute fortune. Don’t think it will happen but they did sing together on a show a couple of years ago. I’ve been to the ABBA museum in Stockholm. Worth a visit if you ever go there.

Differing opinions here as I thought 'Dancing Queen' was a great pop song. Feel good factor as good as it gets and a song to make people smile.Hibsclaret wrote: ↑Fri Apr 03, 2020 10:42 pmABBA are great.

Thanks for the heads up - not to watch.
Re: ABBA on BBC4
Yes, very annoying, but it was turned into "dancing Breen" by Maidstone fans before they sold Gary Breen to Coventry and that was rather amusing.Hibsclaret wrote: ↑Fri Apr 03, 2020 10:42 pmABBA are great.

Tbh I agree it is a great pop song....just, for me, a very annoying one. There are many great pop songs that are annoying. Probably a mixture of how often you hear them and how cheesy they are...Silkyskills1 wrote: ↑Sat Apr 04, 2020 2:03 pmDiffering opinions here as I thought 'Dancing Queen' was a great pop song. Was probably wrong to say it was the worst of their songs, more that it’s the one I don’t like...opinions and all that

I can’t sing for toffee but I’m told their songs are very difficult to sing.
Brilliant performers with songs that will last forever.
