The decision by Liverpool to furlough non playing staff on the Government scheme has gone down badly on the Club Facebook page. If only I could paste a link. Quite worth a visit.

How come no-one is giving Spurs, Newcastle, Norwich & Bournemouth the same stick for doing exactly the same thing when they, like us, can afford to pay their non-playing staff?

It's a f****** disgrace..as with all the others who have asked to Furlough. They can't pay their everyday staff but can afford to be courting Timo Werner for £51 million? So the taxpayers pay for their operation to keep going whilst they use their money to invest in their company? This is akin to someone claiming benefits and foodbanks whilst spunking all their money on plasma tvs, fags and booze. How can the government not step in here? It is becoming a blatant misuse of a vital safety net for smaller businesses.

Norwich don't seem to have money, have they paid a transfer fee since coming up?

Newcastle are run by Mike Ashley so it's kind of expected.

Spurs are getting plenty of stick.

Liverpool are on the top of world football now and getting funded off the Tories. 80% of the premier league league trophy belongs to Boris now.

Furlough payments are tax payers money and Liverpool are abusing the system it was introduced to ensure businesses are around in three months time. Will Liverpool be around yes even without Furlough. If the club thinks it will struggle that much the Govt should legislate a three year transfer ban for clubs that have used furlough that would stop it in its tracks

They should declare themselves a bank, then people would overlook them paying out massive wages but getting government money.

But if that happened the Govt could levy a bankers bonus tax like they did or even a bank tax

What could happen is the government pass legislation that stops players being on anything else other than standard employment contracts. It's too late to do that retrospectively. For now, we just have to put up with the stench that is modern football (and yes, that includes the players) and its media apologists who sit waiting for the crumbs to fall from the table knowing those still make for a good spread.

Yesterday I posted a legal advisory tweet from John Mehrzad QC on the Magic Money Tree thread - one of the key outputs of it was that furloughing staff under the Government scheme constitutes state aid - we know from previous cases that the football authorities (UEFA.FIFA and even the EU) do not look kindly on state aid to football clubs and it will be interesting to see how they look on those clubs that have chosen this route once the current turmoil is over.

It is very different to the exercise of law to reduce wages as a result of force majeure that we have seen in Scotland, Belgium and Spain for example. The English game does not have that built into it's contracts, an oversight that is likely to change in the future.

There are far more important things to worry about, but whatever the solution is for this years competition, Liverpool will be tarnished by their decision to furlough this early. A decision they will come to regret, if they aren’t already. I hope Burnley don’t go the other way, if anybody needs to reduce operating costs ASAP it’s us. Moral high ground is great, but not if it ruins you.

You would think the biggest Tory hating club there is, one whose fans regularly chant celebrating Thatcher being dead would be against taking a hand out from the very same people they hate.

Never surprises how people can ignore their own personal dislike of something in return for a few quid in their pocket

Good point, this.

If they can’t afford to pay their staff for a few months, they shouldn’t be maligning multi-million £ signings in the summer!

Tbf, it isnt Liverpool who hate Thatcher as every club in the country has many supporters who do. That's why there wasn't a minutes silence at football matches after her death. Even Dave Whelan nearly got lynched by Wigan fans for suggesting it was wrong not to hold one.

Wasn't me speaking on behalf of most of the supporters.

I just presumed that a group of people with such a hatred/dislike surely won't accept the money.

Sounds like you're speaking on behalf of the supporters to me.

It's the supporters who chant about Thatcher, you said so yourself. How can the supporters refuse to accept the money?

Or are you talking about the workers?

You expect the workers, most of whom are probably on minimum wage, to forgo their income to make a point?

While I don’t think clubs (or players) should be forced to dock the wages of their playing staff. Believe it or not we we need as much tax as we can get right now. But Situations like this stink. And they should be rightly slaughtered for it.

If you can’t afford to pay the ticket office staff £35k a year you shouldn’t be allowed to pay a reserve midfielder £35k a week.

The problem is one is an asset and one is a commodity in their eyes.

We get that you have an irrational hatred for scousers but I ain’t got a clue what you are talking about.
Are you saying that laid off workers should be refusing their 80% government monies ?
Is that all the million of people laid off in the country or just those who work at Liverpool ?

Both Manchester clubs taking the opportunity to one up on Liverpool by saying they won't furlough the staff

In city's case the announcement followed the outcry after it was revealed the Ex-cel Centre (owned by Abu Dhabi) in London was charging £2m-£3m a month for the Nightingale Hospital there - that led to a swift change of fee to being zero

Scousers really are the worst kind. As Herts said further up, I take it their staff will be paid by the scouse treasury and not the UK.

This is the club that spent 140 million on just two players not too long ago. No wonder some of the loyal scousers are up in arms about it.
