Great article Dave. It brought back many memories. Because I lived on Brunshaw Rd. I got to see many matches from about 1950 and remember Albert Cheesebrough, Jackie Chew, Billy Morris and Harry Potts along with my favourite player of all time - Tommy Cummings.
Your life in Todmorden sounds more exciting than mine but we later moved towards Towneley and had a more
adventurous existence once we could go into the countryside.

It’s been fully in Yorkshire since 1897.

Wonder what went wrong at Roomfield, I went 12 years later but they never taught me to write like that.

Great read Dave and bringing back memories of how we lads got by, without electric gadgets.
Jimmy Adamson did run like a giraffe, but his legs were like an octopus. The way he could from behind an opposition player wrap them round and win the ball without fouling them.
Albert Cheesebrough lived around Leyland Rd as a lad. After football he lived in Southport, where he had a butchers shop.

Re meat trading Dave, Alberts meats would have been quality, not quantity.

Smashing article Dave, I used to travel to games from Ossie with my dad which involved two changes of bus ---that, as a 6 year old was almost as exciting as going to the games and I looked forward to it so much.
Many happy memories of a mis-spent childhood which I wouldn't change for anything --thanks for the memories.

Great read! About the only thing I can remember about 1953 was going to a family friends house to watch the coronation on a television...there must have been about thirty people crammed into the room staring at a tiny screen.

The first television I saw was in Todmorden - the Matthews final. A mate had an aunty who had a set and we rode from Burnley to Tod. to see it. That was a big ride for a ten-year-old, the furthest I'd been, and all was OK until the very last 100 yards of my return. The battery powering my bike lamps went flat and I ran over a brick in the middle of the road, smashed my knee and finished up in the Queen Vic.Hospital.
