MOT and Car Tax Help Needed.

Post by John Johnson 1605 » Mon Apr 06, 2020 3:20 pm

Situation is that my cars MOT and road tax both expire at the end of the month.

Unable to get an MOT but understand the government have issued a 6 month deferral.

My question; does the same apply to car tax as I can’t renew without an MOT?

Help gratefully received.

My understanding is you still have to renew your tax on the due date, the MOT will be classed as still valid as the expiry date is extended for another 6 months

The tax can be done without any trip to the garage, so that will need to be done as normal. Unless you're not using it - if you aren't, declare it as off the road.

Thanks vintage. Problem was when I tried to renew my car tax from the 1/5 (using the 16 digit reference) the control message said the renewal was invalid due to a lack of MOT certificate?

The expiry date will automatically be extended on the day it expires (or possibly a few days earlier) so you won't be able to renew just yet.

It depends when your mot expired. my van was 27th, so I had to get it done. The six month thing is from 30th March onwards. So if your is the 29th you won’t be able to tax it, certainly not online. You might at a post office, I don’t know. But I wouldn’t drive it unless you are certain you are still legal.

I think you can do it over the phone, if anyone is there to answer it.

I downloaded an app, 'Vehicle Smart'. Tells you from reg, when mot, tax due, along with vehicle detail.

My partners not was due end March. Got not in before we were all grounded. Failed! Tyre needed and one close. Checked vehicle smart and fail had registered. End of month it changed to the mot being valid for 6 months.

Nonetheless, the tyres are needed. 2 tyres today. Only journey!

Hmm, I hope so...don't want to be caught out with no MOT if it doesn't automatically extend!

Website says you can check your MOT history a few days before the original expiry date and keep checking back until date of expiry to make sure it has been extended automatically as it should be.

If it's still not extended on the date of expiry you have to e-mail: covid19mot@dvsa.gov.uk with your reg number and MOT expiry date.

We notified your car reg to DVLA saying that although all the tyres are worn out, the brake pads are made of foam, the bulbs of all your lights are dud and it only runs downhill with a wind behind it, could they extend your mot immediately, as the possible delay in knowing is causing anxiety.

Should be done any day.

The police will visit to let you know.
