" I never knew that " ....
A few random connections and facts about the famous ....
1) Bernard Youens, the actor who played Stan Ogden in " Coronation St ", served in the " Desert Rats " in North Africa. He was badly wounded in the leg at the Anzio landings in January 1944.
2) Charlie Chaplin and Albert Einstein were close friends, often having Lunch together.
3) In 1991, Raquel Welsh's son married Freddie Truman's daughter at Bolton Abbey, with the reception being held at the " Devonshire Arms ". Sadly, it lasted only 18 months, Truman quipping, " My run-up lasted longer than that marriage " ..
4) Elvis Presley was a huge fan of " Monty Python ", and used his Film connections to have tapes of the shows flown in for him. He memorised the sketches, his favorite apparently being " The Dead Parrot " .
5) Brian Johnston, the Cricket commentator, won the Military Cross for his work in retrieving destroyed and broken down tanks during World War II, often under fire. This also entailed removing the remains of crews that had been burnt alive when they'd taken a " direct hit " . In his autobiography, he modestly devoted only 3 paragraphs to his war-time service.
6) Arnold Ridley, who played Private Godfrey, in " Dad's Army " actually did serve in the Home Guard, during the war. He lost the use of his left hand from injuries suffered at the Battle of the Somme in the " Great War ", as well as suffering shrapnel wounds to his legs and being bayoneted in the groin by a German.

8) McLaren's very first race car, the M1 A Group 7, was driven by Elvis Presley in his 1966 film " Spinout ". In real life, the car was raced in both the United States and Europe, driven by Graham Hill.
9) The No1 hit, " Do you really want to hurt me " , by Culture Club, hit the top of the Charts on a date nearer the end of the Second World War, than it is to today.
10) The first football chant was penned by Sir Edward Elgar, composer of " Land of Hope and Glory " in 1898. " He wrote " He banged the leather for goal ", in tribute to Wolves forward, Billy Malpass. Elgar would often cycle the 40 miles from his home in Malvern, to watch Wolves play at Molineux.

We're more closely related to a mushroom, than a mushroom is related to plants.

Peanuts, walnuts, almonds, cashews and pistachios aren’t nuts.
Oranges were originally green.
Armadillos have shells so hard they can deflect a bullet.
You’re more likely to get bitten by a person than a shark.

Fredrick Law Olmsted, the man who designed New York’s Central Park, was inspired by a trip he’s made earlier to the first Municipal Park in Britain, in Birkenhead. The Park in Birkenhead had been designed by Joseph Paxton, the man who also designed the Crystal Palace in London’s Hyde Park.

Joseph Bazalgette was the man who designed and built the great embankments and sewers on the river Thames in London, that still exist today. They worked in taking much of Lonon’s sewage and taking it out into the Norh Sea, dramatically reducing the outbreaks of Typhus and Cholera in the city.
His Great Great Grandson, Peter Bazalgette was, whist working for the TV Company Endemol, instrumental in bringing the TV show “Big Brother” to British screens, after it had been a success in it’s country of origin, Holland.
One could say that the former took the sh!t out into the North Sea, the former brought the sh!t back in, via the same route.

Only one word in the English language begins with ‘tm’ - tmesis, which is when one word is inserted into another, eg ‘abso-bloody-lutely’.
