Jimmy Greaves in hospital
No link with the virus but I suspect it’s serious given that Spurs have considered it appropriate to make a statement.

As a Burnley fan there's always a tinge of 'regret' regarding Greaves and 1962, but great player and we all loved Saint and Greavsie and I'm sure we all wish him the best and that he leaves hospital alive like last time (see link)

Re: Jimmy Greaves in hospital
A dangerous time to be going into hospital for anybody let alone someone in bad health.
Once met Jimmy in Burnley and he loved the banter with northerners. One of the best goalscorers the world of football has ever seen.

All the best to Jimmy , I was fortunate to get his autograph after a game v Chelsea when I got on the team coach and he duly signed as the coach set off and dropped me off near the Locarno.
Happy days

He was astounding as a footballer, there are some wonderful interviews with him out there, Struck me as a very thoughtful man.
His books are great too. Great sense of humour . I watched a goal compilation last week. Genius.

Re: Jimmy Greaves in hospital
I’d be very pleased but surprised if he comes back out.
Not long since he was given only a forty percent chance of pulling through after his last admittance. One of a kind, never to be repeated. An old friend of mine who is minor celeb status knows Jimmy well and worships him, like most Spurs fans.
Good luck Jimmy. God bless

What a great player! Definitely not the player to leave unmarked in the 6 yard box. Wonderful character so best wishes to a real legend.

I met him at a book signing here in Milton Keynes about 15 years or so ago and asked to shake the hand of England's greatest ever goal scorer.
He duly obliged

Re: Jimmy Greaves in hospital
Met him at the Turf back in 1985 at a dinner. He was just the same bloke as you saw on TV even when the cameras weren't running. And then on the pitch he was simply the best goalscorer I've ever seen.

Re: Jimmy Greaves in hospital
Used to love Saint & Greavsie. Never saw him play tho.
Re: Jimmy Greaves in hospital
Never saw him play live but the old clips of him gliding like past players he looked a great player. Really unlucky in 1966. Geoff Hurst went down in history but from what other people say Jimmy was by some distance the no1 striker in England during that period.
His goal scoring record for club and country is insane. It looks like the ridiculous stats that Ronaldo and Messi have now.
Loved Saint & Greavesy - watched it every week. The one thing I remember about Greavesy which sticks in my mind is that he was asked about playing at Burnley and he said he used to love playing here and he mentioned that he remembers coming into Burnley over the tops and being at the top of Manchester road at the Waggoners and how he could see the whole of Burnley from there and the great view of the town (he doesn’t actually mention the Waggoners by name of course !)

" We used to come up to Manchester by train, and then take a Coach to Burnley. We'd go up and down these hills and finally, we'd drive down from the Moors, and out of the smoke and fog, the town of Burnley would gradually appear like " Brigadoon ", all these neat rows of terraced streets and Mill chimneys " ...... or something like that !

Re: Jimmy Greaves in hospital
Best memory I've got of Greavsie was patting him on the back when he was taking a corner from The Cricket Field End back in the 60s. In those days the players often used to push back into the crowd as there was little room for a run up before kicking the ball. I was right at the corner and gave him a pat Best striker I've seen play. Get well soon.

Yours might be more accurate !!Clarets4me wrote: ↑Wed Apr 08, 2020 11:47 amI remember that quote, but slightly differently ...

Mine might be clouded by coming back from Manchester most days for 30 years on my work commute as I loved that view of Burnley on a sunny day when you reach Waggoners !

Re: Jimmy Greaves in hospital
Just reflecting on the Dirty Leeds thread and how my disdain for them lives to this day.
....and then I think of Jimmy Greaves and immediately there's a smile on my face. Yes he scored goals for fun against us, which I wish he didn't but he did; a goal scorer supreme. Watching Saint & Greavsie all those years ago, he amused and entertained me (when the Clarets didn't) but always had respect for us.
So, as they say, it's not the result that matters, but how you play the game. I liked the way he played the game.
Pull through Jimmy.

Re: Jimmy Greaves in hospital
My Dad told me he wasn't just a great goalscorer but also a great player. And I always tended to believe my Dad.
Re: Jimmy Greaves in hospital
Think he mentioned seeing the flood lights once. I’ve always imagined the coach coming down from BacupClarets4me wrote: ↑Wed Apr 08, 2020 11:47 amI remember that quote, but slightly differently ...

Hope he recovers. Many times on here I've eulogised about him. Incredible goalscorer and he seemed to just glide over the ground. Think the disappointment of '66 took some getting over.

The news today sounds a bit better than it was last night. We know that he’s never going to be a well man again but whatever this problem is, it does appear to be easing.

There’s been no suggestion as to what the problem is other than it not being COVID-19 related.Jakubclaret wrote: ↑Wed Apr 08, 2020 11:45 pmYou'll get good & bad days I should imagine after the serious stroke he's had, I hope he remains comfortable & overcomes what's troubling him.

He’s left hospital and now returned home. Whatever it was, the statement today says he’s been very ill.

Statement from his son Danny: “Dad is comfortable and we are pleased he is back home where he can have some rest and recuperation. He has not been well, and we are still waiting on all the results. On behalf of our family, I would like to thank all the NHS staff that have been looking after Dad and for all the well wishes we have received.”
