ARTICLE: Crucial Pointer goal secures win at Forest
We're back to the 1959/60 season today and a trip to the City Ground to play Forest, the team we'd beaten 8-0 at home back in the previous November.

Elton John's uncle in the line up for Forest and former Claret, Billy Gray. Getting very tight near the top now and that was a good win with a less than first choice eleven.

"a Mr William Ellis who had been talking to his workmates about his judo. One of those workmates claimed Ellis was just bragging and before he knew where he was, Ellis had hit him in the face with his fist and then, when he’d fallen, kicked him in the face four times."
I've watched a bit of judo in my time but not seen that move.

Having read that I’ve decided not to take up judo.cricketfield73 wrote: ↑Thu Apr 09, 2020 12:36 pm"a Mr William Ellis who had been talking to his workmates about his judo. Roy Dwight had broken his leg in the cup final in 1959 too.Silkyskills1 wrote: ↑Thu Apr 09, 2020 12:24 pmElton John's uncle in the line up for Forest and former Claret, Billy Gray. Getting very tight near the top now and that was a good win with a less than first choice eleven.
Billy Gray died in 2011 and on the day we played Forest at the City Ground.

I'm sure Dwight played in the 8-0 game so must have recovered fairly quickly.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Thu Apr 09, 2020 1:07 pmRoy Dwight had broken his leg in the cup final in 1959 too.

“A light ball” might be stretching it anytime up to the 70s, CT. Thanks for the report.

Cant remember much about Billy Marshall. He rarely played for the first team despite being at Burnley for a significant period of time. After Alex Elder was signed, it would have been difficult for anyone to take his place...same with John Angus.

Stuart Imlach for Forest was the subject of a very good book by his son; "My Father and Other Working Class Football Heroes"

Billy Marshall only played six games for us and passed away just a couple of weeks after Brian Miller in April 2007 (Dusty on the 7th and Marshall on the 20th, both were 70).Suratclaret wrote: ↑Fri Apr 10, 2020 5:18 amCant remember much about Billy Marshall. He did once help me get a job though. I went for the interview and one of the interviewers was clearly Irish. He had my CV in front of him, saw my address was Burnley and asked if I ever saw Jimmy McIlroy play. He then told me that Jimmy was his footballing hero but also that he went to school with Billy Marshall. I'll never know whether I'd have got the job otherwise.

Good Lord I remember going to that game. My father had a cousin who was a country vicar in a nearby village so we went down to visit him and he came with us I think. The Rev George Suthers. He eventually became a Canon and we always joked that he eventually got fired. Bless my soul..the things you remember.
