It may not happen because it is being championed by those most likely to break FFP and the clubs that are more prudent don't see why they should help clubs that are reckless and push up player costs

when I read it last night I thought it had Mel Morris written all over it - he has written most of the book on circumventing FFP and may have found the last available route open to him short of buying a shed load of new shares from himself in a club that no longer has any assets because he already sold them to himself at vastly inflated prices

So Leeds, for example, would tell their players that their contracts have been torn up and they would like them to sign a new contract on reduced terms. And for the better players at least, the agent would tell them that a Premier League club wants them on a free transfer and will pay a sizeable signing bonus plus a pay rise.

I agree it is flaky but, the scenario says all that kind of thing would be pre-agreed before the group administration - I don't believe it will come to pass so only talking hypotheticals - as I said last night "interesting discussion point if nothing else" and it is just that, a discussion point extremely unlikely to be anything more, given the Mail were running the story about some clubs seeing it as a means of avoiding FFP alongside it.

Saw this bullet point at the start of the article which I would have thought makes it a complete non starter.

I don't have a lot of knowledge on the current championship clubs finances but I'm sure there must be at least one or two (or with wealthy backing) that could survive without this, break ranks and clean up

Premier League. We know from experience that Leeds have players worth signing, and that was when they weren't top. I'm 100% sure that Leeds have players that a Premier League team would take on a free transfer.

I dare say they will. But I suspect that even so, the likes of Kelvin Phillips and Ollie Watkins will be able to find a club willing to take them on a free. Don't you think so?

Nothing will stop Premier League teams from signing players before the transfer window opens. They can do that now, occasionally. They can employ a player and pay him a wage, and then register him as soon as the window opens. If the State of Qatar offers Phillips a cast iron contract with the signing fee payable now, then he has no risk.
