Entire championship going into administration

Post by clarethomer » Thu Apr 09, 2020 7:03 pm

Couldn’t see an obvious thread

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/footb ... lemma.html

Would be interesting to say the least if this happened

Surely our dry powder would be useful if every player in the Championship became available. I can’t see it but would be a huge opportunity for us.

a nuclear option, a doomsday scenario.

it's more akin to the Guardian reporting, then it would be gospel and all over this board.

Regardless I think everyone can dismiss it, well nearly everyone ;)

Have another go. I'm sure there's a point in there desperate to get out.

Daily Mail is not my newspaper of choice but Martin Samuel is a good and very respected football journalist. Your post would make you seem so narrow minded. What about the content. Why not comment on that?

Guardian is always good for a laugh. Although if your a 16 or 17 year old student yoy could be taken in and treat it semi seriously.

He’s probably using the law of averages and given that 99% of the reporting is false or just plain made up.... I’d say he’s using his time wisely.

Has he taken a voluntary 30% reduction in salary and donated it to the NHS?

I'll be honest and say I've found the DM's football finance reporting fairly good this season.

Won't happen because it would mean they would lose all their better players for no transfer fee.

not if the scenario outlined in the article is followed

It may not happen because it is being championed by those most likely to break FFP and the clubs that are more prudent don't see why they should help clubs that are reckless and push up player costs

when I read it last night I thought it had Mel Morris written all over it - he has written most of the book on circumventing FFP and may have found the last available route open to him short of buying a shed load of new shares from himself in a club that no longer has any assets because he already sold them to himself at vastly inflated prices

The scenario there is an agreement between the 24 Championship chairmen. It would not be agreed by the Premier League chairmen or by the players.

So Leeds, for example, would tell their players that their contracts have been torn up and they would like them to sign a new contract on reduced terms. And for the better players at least, the agent would tell them that a Premier League club wants them on a free transfer and will pay a sizeable signing bonus plus a pay rise.

What's the player going to do?

I agree it is flaky but, the scenario says all that kind of thing would be pre-agreed before the group administration - I don't believe it will come to pass so only talking hypotheticals - as I said last night "interesting discussion point if nothing else" and it is just that, a discussion point extremely unlikely to be anything more, given the Mail were running the story about some clubs seeing it as a means of avoiding FFP alongside it.

Just below the picture of the Riverside with the padlock.

"there would be legal implications and it would require huge trust from all teams"

Saw this bullet point at the start of the article which I would have thought makes it a complete non starter.

I don't have a lot of knowledge on the current championship clubs finances but I'm sure there must be at least one or two (or with wealthy backing) that could survive without this, break ranks and clean up

Premier League. We know from experience that Leeds have players worth signing, and that was when they weren't top. I'm 100% sure that Leeds have players that a Premier League team would take on a free transfer.

Do you not think the premier league clubs will be looking to reduce costs as well?

I dare say they will. But I suspect that even so, the likes of Kelvin Phillips and Ollie Watkins will be able to find a club willing to take them on a free. Don't you think so?

Yes, in a straight forward scenario.

But it's far from straight forward with far too many variables.

Would Phillips risk waiting 4/5 months of no pay if he was only to have his wage reduced by 1k a week? From 35k to 34k a week or similar?
Or just sign the new contract?

And any non-football creditors receive 25 pence in the pound? Nice.

Nothing will stop Premier League teams from signing players before the transfer window opens. They can do that now, occasionally. They can employ a player and pay him a wage, and then register him as soon as the window opens. If the State of Qatar offers Phillips a cast iron contract with the signing fee payable now, then he has no risk.
