China

Could we see less demand for their cheap goods, services and food on the back of the outbreak ? I see they have reclassified dogs and cats as domestic pets rather than a credible source of meat.

Primark shipments piling up somewhere... Let's hope it's the start of the end to the junk era.

I bought some slippers from there and they lasted for a day. On that basis I'd spend £1500 a year on slippers and be responsible for a whole bin lorry worth of landfill.

China runs its economy on cheap nasty fakes made by cheap forced labour. If it says made in China leave it on the shelf

Pretty sure the USA / China trade talks are on hold.

Bearing in mind that prior to the virus that the worlds stock markets for the last couple of years have fluctuated pretty much on the basis of whether these talks were going well or not we could be in for a bumpy ride to say the least

In 1986 I think you may have had a point. But these days it’s a very very different story. It’s unlikely that most people even know that a significant proportion of things they use every day are now in some form or other made in China.
Your taps were probably made in china, the interior parts on your car dashboard, your vacuum cleaner etc etc

Not true. China’s manufacturing is far more advanced and their workforce far more skilled than the western world.

Never mind the cats and dogs, it’s the ******* bats and other wild species they kill for medicine and food that needs to be stopped first.

Yep. That post was probably made on a chinese manufactured phone, whilst having a brew made in a Chinese manufactured kettle whilst a Chinese manufactured telly is on in the background

While some of the stuff they manufacture is hi-tec, they still manufacture an awful lot of cheap tat. Regularly using prisoners (some of them imprisoned for trivial things like criticising the government) as the workforce

Maybe, but I wouldn’t say China runs its economy on cheap nasty fakes.

We could. But I doubt it.

If people want to eat cats and dogs, as long as they have the same hygiene standards as the rest of their food chain, I don't see why they shouldn't.

Yowzer, that's a super opening for a debate :D

Lot of very outdated thoughts/ideas regarding China on here, I remember people talking about Honda cars when they first came from Japan and laughing at them, they're not laughing now. We had a similar discussion before plus the super statements about S Korea being backwards in regard to the far East countries, I am very interested to watch the recovery unfold and compare with Europe and the US.

Your not well informed. Where did you get your information from? They do make cheap junk just dont buy it. But they also make some very high quality products. I know because I buy some of these products. China is partly responsible for the very competitive prices of goods that you and I buy. They mass manufacture and that is how they keep costs down. Forced Labour!!! No way.

Some very good musical instruments, such as concert pianos. Not cheap rubbish and not forced labour.

Is there much meat on a cat? I don't imagine them tasting great to be honest.

The whole of the far East, including China is much further advanced Technology wise, than most of Europe.
They have an advantage over us, that a lot of our manufacturing infrastructure is very old and not fit for modern industry. Their factories are far more modern, built for purpose, and therefore economically more efficient.
I've said before on other threads how much I like the Portillo travelogues. If you've watched any on the far East you wouldn't dream of calling them backwards. Some of their building schemes put us to shame. They also have a drive on education, and the discipline of students within that system, that leaves them far more advantaged than some of the work shy, knuckle daggers that we churn out. They'll make mistakes as we all do, but China will pull through this, as will the rest of the far east, in a far better position than Europe, including us.

Doesn't look like and nor do I. But they're just animals. If somebody fancies eating them instead of pigs, why would it be my concern?

There will be a massive falling out after this eases off.

Trump going for reelection, Boris being ill here. There will be a lot of finger pointing at the Chinese for covering this up and costing “x” lives as a result.

I’m not getting into the blame game, I don’t have the evidence, but the leaders do, and I suspect there won’t be any direction other than a reverse of globalisation.

It partly does, wouldn't describe products as fakes just cheap nasty s**t that breaks within a short lifespan & needs to be replaced quite often, I've worked with chinese manufactured products & it's a nightmare from start to finish, it's that cheap everything ends up in a skip & gets credited.
