As a Clarets fan living in Cambridge all my life. I have a lot of fond memories of Burnley coming for away days.
One that sticks in mind was Adrian Randall and his run on goal and scoring Fa cup 1994.
I also got arrested and released without charge, mistaken identity. October 1993. Got a lift to the match from police on blue lights

Any memories of this fixture? Good or bad

I think we won 1-0 there in the 99/00 promotion season, a night game. Could be wrong on the result. We might not have even played them!

I remember the refreshment bar having a fire where the sausages were cooking.

Seen some wins there including the 4-0 when Hansbury was in goal for them.

Also a defeat in 1987/88 when we had two players sent off.

I vaguely remember an FA Cup game there mid 90's I think.

Walking through a field to get there and it was rammed with Burnley fans behind the goal.

Damn it, I almost went with Cooke too! No idea how I remember that, I wasn't even there!

My favorite Andy Payton goal came at home against Cambridge Utd in the 1999-2000 promotion season. Andy picks up a flick on from Steve Davis with his back to goal and two defenders on him, a " Cruyff turn ", one touch and blasts left footed past a non-plussed Lionel Perez into the top corner. Brilliant goal !

Andy then sets off for the Burnley bench where Ian Wright's sitting, " How about that then ? "

I remember local news reporting the next day that some school kids had been verbally abused in stand opposite.
There had been trouble a few months before in the October hence my arrest. I was arrested because I was wearing a Burnley shirt and gave my Cambridge address. They repeatedly asked me for correct address. After 30 mins of trying to explain. I was arrested on public for calling policeman a ****.

Think Im right in saying this was a all ticket game for seating? They completely underestimated fans standing. There was another standing section towards the main side stand, but they never opened it, because concrete and brickwork was crumbling

yeah I think that is correct, I remember Clarets sitting off to our left (I think, my memory is crap!!). One of the lads was driving and we ended up at Cambridge City's ground first ! Got to the United's ground (Abbey Stadium ??) just before kick off

Good times but makes me enjoy our current status even more

The game in Oct. 93 was a 1-0 win with a David Eyres first minute goal down at the other end from our fans. The first outing for Rossendale Clarets because I was on it with my son.

My only visit to Cambridge was on New Year's Day 1990.

I remember two things, Pearce being constantly asked to do the Lambada by our fans behind the goal and me losing my scarf on the A1, as i forgot it was hanging out of the window and i wound it down cos i was too hot

I remember us having 9 men and losing 2-0.

I remember walking along a tow path to get to the ground, then our end of it.

I remember leaving my wife and mother in law in the centre and me and father in law watching the match.

I remember not knowing the way to the ground. I stopped the car and asked the way....over and over and over again! No one knew Cambridge!

My abiding memory of going to Cambridge was from a night match in 1999.
I got home in the early hours and when I went to bed my girlfriend groggily asked me the score. Excitedly I told her the result to which she replied "phhhh, all that way for 1-0".
Still makes me chuckle that one.

My one and only visit was the 4-0 win when Hapless Hansbury was in goal for Cambridge. We were crap back then but still managed to score 4 in the first half.

I may have travelled on a Boxcar/Scholes chara to this game. I do recall being on a coach and we passed the team coach and the driver announces that we are about to pass your idols. And they don't come much more f***ing idle than this lot......

Only went there the once, must've been 1999 for the 1-0 win. Don't remember much.

But my Dad has a story about Cambridge which is both amusing and also terrible.

There was a single footpath and ditch which was the only access to the away end and was about a mile long. You obviously wouldn't go down there unless you were an away fan. However, one night as the Burnley fans piled out of the away end, a posh university student riding his sit-up-and-beg bicycle was taking a short cut down this single, narrow path. He very suddenly and unexpectedly found himself negotiating a route through a streaming crowd of angry northerners.

Unwisely, he tringed his bell and tried to politely ask people to make way for him. One Burnley fan took offence at this and pushed the student into the ditch before hopping on the bike and pegging it to the end of the footpath. Cue uproarious laughter from the majority of the crowd.

The way my Dad describes it makes it sound simultaneously hilarious and shamefully cruel.

I'm glad to report that the student was helped up by some kindlier Clarets and his bike was retrieved at the end of the footpath.

Anybody else heard the same story or witness this?

Went in 1993 (1-0 win) and 1995 (4-2 win). Can't remember much about the 1993 game apart from having a couple of pints in a pub on the main road.

The FA Cup game it appeared that most of the away following were bladdered and the chant of the day was "your sh!t and you ride a bike". Think we had a few before in the same pub, possibly Wrestlers.

Vague memories of allotments near the ground.

Remember going late seventies on the Viscount Central coaches herded back to coaches through a narrow bridge and police with dogs letting them take a nip at you if you got to near, there was one dog and it was a massive poodle style dog apparently used in Germany for crowd control, vicious thing, also on our coach was a bicycle someone nicked.

I went there In the very late 70's, or early 80's for a 2-2 draw.
Anyone wearing Doc Martens or similar had them confiscated, I saw a couple of lads sat on the crush barriers to keep their feet off the freezing concrete steps.
There were allotments behind the away end. And a stand that stopped at the half way line.

There was a match at Turf Moor when we won 5-2 or 3 they had two sent off by referee McNally (I think).
He did not tolerate any dissent.

Went to the Tuesday night 1-0 win with my Mum on the Burnley Supporters Coach. Think it was the only time I went to an away game with just me mam hence I remember the day well. Dad was working so couldn't come. It was my one & only visit to the ground on the very small terracing behind the goal before they built the new stand.
Awful game, was windy and maybe even rained, and a goal in the first minute. Think that was about it. But one of those scrappy away wins that takes you up!!

When I went, people were knocking on the gates, parking their bikes under the stand, exiting and then going back through the turnstiles, paying on the way through.

April 4th 1987 on the Turf lost 2-0. Only 1800 on and we were bobbins. But things could only get better-after getting even worse

My only visit to the Abbey Stadium was November 1986 Cambridge 3 Burnley 1. Travelled up from NW London by train. Met a Claret at Liverpool St who'd travelled up from Southampton. Had a few beers pre game before we got played off the park. Remember walking across what seemed to be a very large park back to the train station thoroughly miserable. A crowd of 2500 according to some stats page.

I remember going on my 15th birthday October 93, behind the goal sunny day, We won 1-0 with David Eyres scoring in the first minute..

I have a memory not sure if was Cambridge, but enough detail on this thread to suggest it is.
Late 8O’s got beat ( no surprise) , coach left on the car park (Rossy Clarets) all on the bus went round Cambridge on a stag do( could have been Selwyns)

I heard about that, apparently it was the King's College Choir " Firm ", seeking revenge for what had happened to one of their mates who'd been cycling near the ground some years previously ( see Rowls' post ). Rumour has it, they weren't necessarily the hardest of lads, but they could sing " You're gonna get your f*****g heads kicked in ! " really quite beautifully !!

That 2-2 game was my first away day to Cambridge, November 78. I was living in Staffs at the time and had arranged to get picked up at Keele Services by a van running out of the Swan pub, my regular pre-match boozer in those days. Wonder if this was that same van you refer to? I remember it was packed with the usual 12-14 lads. Always a lot of beer flowed on those trips.

I remember an FA Cup game. It was the first time I’d seen Alan Lee in a Burnley shirt. Think we won 1-0.

My only visit and I can only recall how forgettable the experience was.....it was foggy and from the away end which was down by the corner flag you could see very little of the key moment, which came very early in the game...neil grewcock receiving a red.....
Game over...but I think we managed a 2nd red and a heavy defeat....guess it was mid 80s?

Strangely I also remember chatting to a youngster who lived in Southampton....but had been brought up as a claret.

I recall a train trip there with Selwyn back the 80s.Think we came back from 2 down to win 3-2.
Also seem to recall some excellent bacon butties served in the ground.

I played for Ely City. Cambridge City hated united as they always thought they should have got in the league and not united.

Yes, his brother is Tex who is well known locally and was a very good goalkeeper at local level
