Excellent that Dave. It's great to reminisce sometimes. I particularly liked the bit about having to have a fag at half time.
I always enjoy your articles.

Nice article and that picture of the team before playing Villa brings back some memories but not all
Going left to right are the players back row Reg Atwell ? Jimmy Strong, Harold Mather, Arthur Woodruff
Front row Jackie Chew, don't know Jack Billingham, George Bray, don't know and at the other end Jack Hays.
This must have been in the late 40's after Hill arrived ?48-49 season.Billy Dougall is far left no idea who is in mufti
between Strong and Mather

I was taught by Mrs Strong in my 1st year at Rose hill Junior school. Year 4 in new money. Pretty sure she was Jimmy Strong's wife. That would be around 1973/4. She was still there when l left in 1977. Can anyone confirm?

They are all Sandria's words. There is a lot more but mostly about Sandria and early school life. So edited down a bit. But all Sandria's.

My dad, who passed away in Saturday used to quote the team starting with Strong, Woodruff, Mather ...... sadly as his dementia took over he couldn’t recall the names ..... any “elder” Clarets out there that can complete the team for me as I would like to quote it at dads funeral.

Not exactly sure but in the 40’s just before I started so I saw those 3
Then there was I think ATWELL Brown Bray Chew Morris Harrison and later Holden Potts and Kippax
By the 50’s Holdenwas cente forward Cummings centre half Adamson half back Aird for Woodruff
Not sure who took over from Potts unless it was Shannon and Mac May have taken over from Morris Then there was Elliot on left wing

Mrs Strong was Jimmy Strong's wife. I was in her class at Rosehill in the late 1960s. I remember a Burnley Express article about the school in which she mentioned it. I also remember her as a good teacher.

Also in the article a fascinating photo of the team boarding a plane to Stuttgart at the end of the '49/'50 season, including a very young looking Jimmy Mac, Jimmy Adamson and Tommy Cummings.

Also in the photo, manager Frank Hill at the very back, Les Shannon, Billy Morris, Jack Hays, Arthur Woodruff, Harold Mather, Bill Holden, Roy Stephenson & Reg Kirkham, amongst others.

I think our Directors at the front are Tom Clegg and Mr. Hopkinson.

Jimmy Strong was our 'Egg Man'! (Probably in the late 60s/early 70s)
If I happened to answer the door, his greeting was always 'Haway, Bonny Lad' in a soft geordie accent.
A lovely man!

Thanks for posting this, a lovely article beautifully written, I like the use of the word malodourus, I had to to look it up as it could have meant just generally bad or ill, in the way that dolourus means painful.

It's a small world and it was the mention of the ironmongers (Coal Clough Lane, just around the corner from Cog Lane) and Back Lane School that caught my attention. That's the school my cousin went to, the cousin who was like the big sister I never had.

When I read the article I realised my cousin was of similar age to Jimmy Strong's daughter. Dave has checked with Sandria and she remembers my cousin from schooldays. My cousin died almost 51 years ago and it was so nice for me to know there was someone else who remembered her.
