Also trying to organise a fly over his house on his birthday but that's TBD depending on what red tape can be cut through

Such a great story to come out of this current situation. Fantastic for the NHS too. This man deserves the credit and adulation although I doubt very much he seeks the latter.

Actually, this gives the PM a problem .....ClaretTony wrote: ↑Fri Apr 17, 2020 9:34 amOver £18 million now and the PM has confirmed he will be looking at ways to recognise him
a) Gives him a knighthood .... " it's a populist gesture " , " what about people who've raised money for 25-30 years for various charities ? " , " What recognition for the hard-pressed NHS staff who were actually on the " front line " ? "
b) Gives him a CBE/OBE/MBE ...... " Tory toff PM out of touch with the people ", " Sir Phillip Green but no Sir Tom ? Outrage sweeps indignant nation " etc....
I reckon Sir Tom Moore, and a collective George Cross for the NHS as an organisation .... Malta and it's people got one after World War II, so there is a precedent of sorts for this ....

Captain Tom duets on charity single
Captain Tom Moore has teamed up with actor-singer Michael Ball for a cover of You'll Never Walk Alone in a bid to raise more money for the Britain's National Health Service.
The 99-year-old war veteran set out to raise £1,000 for NHS Charities Together by walking 100 laps of his garden before his 100th birthday.
He finished the walk on Thursday, with the total now standing at more than £22m.
The pair have recorded a duet of the song, which also features the NHS Voices of Care Choir.
Stage star Ball said it would be "wonderful" for the single to reach number one in time for the veteran's birthday on 30 April.

In case people were wondering where all these funds the Captain has raised actually go,there's more info here, and it is a reasonable question to ask.

So a spitfire flypast has been arranged splendid and well deserved.

Re: Captain Tom Moore - inspirational
I find it strange how we choose our heroes. This guy has done a very respectable thing and raised an absolute mountain of cash for a worthy cause. But he’s just done a bit of walking in his garden. The reality is it is the media’s coverage of this particular cause that has led to the enormous donations.
Not in any way trying to put a downer on what’s been achieved here, but there are lots of other people who carry out selfless charitable acts which just don’t get the attention.
Releasing a single (WTAF??) and talks of being recognised by the PM are just examples of people jumping on the PR bandwagon.

He’s served his country, grown old and decided he’d still like to mark his 100th Birthday by raising money, he’s raised 25M +

I know he’s old. Fair play, a few people make it to that age, most don’t. That’s just the luck of the draw. My point being that his fundraising could easily have raised just a few quid. He’s not done anything particularly remarkable by walking some lengths of his garden. There are people undertaking far more remarkable feats which won’t raise a fraction of this.Burnley1989 wrote: ↑Sun Apr 19, 2020 12:05 amHe’s 100 though mate? He’s not your average person.

The media has drawn enormous attention to this particular campaign which has led to a huge amount of people, myself included, making a donation. It’s all for a great cause so I’m delighted it’s been so successful. But in reality this particular chap hasn’t done anything more than someone running a marathon with a washing machine on their back for Cancer Research.
It seems like in these troubled times people are desperate to find heroes. I’ve not got a problem with that, I just don’t feel the same way. I don’t really understand the hollow gesture of clapping for the NHS workers at a pre-defined time every week, or calling refuse collectors and delivery drivers heroes. Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against those who do, I’m just not feeling it.

You don't need to feel it, if people want to do somersaults & handstands & Irish jigs or whatever to show there gratitude I've no bones with that, everybody working thru this shower are heroes, it was on the wireless earlier 10 bus drivers dying probably on a poorly paid wage.

It's absolutely fantastic, what he's done and the money he's raised. Problem is, we're very much in danger of the nhs being seen as a charity when it isnt, its supposed to be properly funded by the government.
It's brilliant that all these people are raising funds to support the nhs workers but they shouldn't have to.

How can everyone working through this be heroes? The bus drivers who die are extremely unfortunate but they’re not heroes. They’re doing their job to earn money to support themselves and their family, like most of us do.Jakubclaret wrote: ↑Sun Apr 19, 2020 12:30 amYou don't need to feel it, if people want to do somersaults & handstands & Irish jigs or whatever to show there gratitude I've no bones with that, everybody working thru this shower are heroes, it was on the wireless earlier 10 bus drivers dying probably on a poorly paid wage.

I really do understand and agree with what you’re saying to be honest, I donate to 3-4 charities every month via direct debit because I work in sales and always give time to your guys that knock the door and give a good passionate pitch on charities , I’ve never told anyone until today, I don’t want any praise I just like to feel I can spare the equivalent of a night out every month to charities.... The bus drivers are transporting some of the NHS staff about there don't have to, heroes in my book, most of the taxis have stopped, a bus driver is well within his rights to ask for perspex shields even as an essential worker on H&S grounds & refuse to work, but some carried on exposed shuttling the NHS crew back & forth.Rileybobs wrote: ↑Sun Apr 19, 2020 12:38 amHow can everyone working through this be heroes? Absolutely. It’s no bad thing. It’s just a shame that it’s taken something like this to make some people (not targeted at you) appreciate the people who play a key role in our society. I’m always polite and respectful of healthcare professionals, supermarket staff etc.Burnley1989 wrote: ↑Sun Apr 19, 2020 12:41 amI really do understand and agree with what you’re saying to be honest, I donate to 3-4 charities every month via direct debit because I work in sales and always give time to your guys that knock the door and give a good passionate pitch on charities , I’ve never told anyone until today, I don’t want any praise I just like to feel I can spare the equivalent of a night out every month to charities.... A few years ago my other half had serious complications leading to our son being born 5 weeks premature, the alternative being that she wouldn’t be here now. I couldn’t have a better word to say about every single person who treated her, and there must have been around 50 during the 3 weeks in hospital. I think most people already know and appreciate what a great job they do, but being told how and when to show appreciation to them leaves a bad taste for me. Anyway, I digress... I blame the wine.

As with many charitable acts there seems to be someone desperate to tell others about it. I wouldn’t consider footballers heroes either. Having said that I can’t help but get goosebumps watching the pre-match video on the big screen to Bowie’s Heroes.Burnley1989 wrote: ↑Sun Apr 19, 2020 12:47 amI’ve watched my LinkedIn page full of companies telling the world what the are doing to help the NHS, at first I thought ‘calm down, your just looking to big your company up’ incorrect though, anyone who is doing a job that is saving life’s or helping a struggling UK economy IS a hero. Again, nothing against this guy getting recognition for what he’s doing, my point being that lots of other people are doing just as ‘heroic’ acts which haven’t had gigantic media campaigns behind them.

Re: Captain Tom Moore - inspirational
Hope everyone will be joining Ben Fogle singing happy birthday to the queen at 9am on Tuesday (is it Tuesday?).
A true patriot and hero he is.

And you're 100% bang on the money.Burnley1989 wrote: ↑Sun Apr 19, 2020 12:05 amHe’s 100 though mate? He’s not your average person.
He’s served his country, grown old and decided he’d still like to mark his 100th Birthday by raising money, he’s raised 25M +
Yeah I’d say he’s a hero to me

My point being that his fundraising could easily have raised just a few quid. He’s not done anything particularly remarkable by walking some lengths of his garden. There are people undertaking far more remarkable feats which won’t raise a fraction of this.
