Re: Captain Tom Moore - inspirational
Just watched the coverage of Honorary Colonel Tom Moore.
Bloody hell, seeing him surrounded by his proud and adoring children and grand children. Seeing the tributes pouring in from the emergency services, Michael Vaughan, and a whole host of others really brought a lump to my throat.
Seeing the counter for the money he's raised , edge closer to the £30 million mark. And seeing footage of his early lonely, selfless and genuinely unselfconcious , Zimmer supported trek got me. When the Spitfires flew past and he punched the air, that really got me. What a fabulous emotional moment.
A truly remarkable feat.
A truly remarkable achievement.
A truly remarkable hero, and humble gentleman.
God bless you Honorary Colonel Tom

Truly inspiratiuonal and very emotional, brought a tear to my eye. Almost 12 months to the day since I lost my father who was a Yorkshire man and served in WW2, I can understand just hopw proud his family must be feeling, literally bursting with pride. Such a shining light in these hard times.

Freedom of City of London to be awarded
Captain Tom Moore will receive the Freedom of the City of London in recognition of his charitable work, it has been announced.
I think it's fair to say he's more than repaid the NHS for his treatment,In 2018, he received treatment for skin cancer of the head, and a broken hip after a fall.
'cometh the hour, cometh the man',and his hour has certainly come, and he's certainly the man, what impresses me is how humble he remains, despite all the media coverage,he takes it in his stride.
In all the darkness the nation needed a morale booster, and that's exactly what Captain(now Colonel) Tom has provided.

The appeal hit £29,000,000 at around 6.30pm on Sunday ..... it seems ridiculous to say but over the last four days, it " slowed down " markedly, to about £145,000 a day ..... In the last 2 hours, it's raised around £415,000 ....Bordeauxclaret wrote: ↑Thu Apr 30, 2020 9:18 amI wonder if we’ll see a jump in donations today to push it well over £30m.

A card from the Queen, Personal message from the PM, Freeman of the City of London, a train named after him, No.1 in the Charts, 2 entries in the Guinness Book of Records, a flypast from a Spitfire & Hurricane, given an honorary England Cricket Cap and made an honorary Colonel of his old Regiment ..... it's been been an interesting month for Captain Tom !!

Captain Tom's page has gone from £29,650,000 at mid-night, to £31,956,000 now .... I suspect the news coverage between 6-7 tonight will see this sustained, especially as it's now been announced, by his daughter, that the fund will close at midnight ....

That's a heck of a leap in a matter of hours, probably makes sense to close the fund now,it's more than succeeded, and it'is his birthday, the old boy will want to put his feet up,and take a well-earned rest.Clarets4me wrote: ↑Thu Apr 30, 2020 5:53 pmCaptain Tom's page has gone from £29,650,000 at mid-night, to £31,956,000 now .... I am happy that this centenarian has received a knighthood. Very much deserved. Not for the 100 (or the 200) laps he did, but for the relentless media he had to face. A task he did with aplomb.
However, I have a gripe and that is for anyone using a military rank years after leaving the military. Once folk have left, that's it. No one calls me or you by our job title, why military?
Also, 'other ranks' never use it, only the former officers.
Barmy!

Presidents of the USA also retain the title after leaving office, and can receive copies of the daily presidential briefing.IanMcL wrote: ↑Thu May 21, 2020 3:02 pmI am happy that this centenarian has received a knighthood.
