Excellent, Tony, from the lovely innocence of the introduction of 20 minute bingo to the diasappearing stomach cramp...."I'd give it a few minutes before you go in there, mate."....
I love the notion of JT getting booked, presumably for ungentlemanly conduct, for gloating about the score.
God, can you imagine how many ungentlemanly conDuct bookings there'd be these days with all the kicking the ball away, yapping, harrassing linesmen and so on ? A shame to see refs bottle out of taking such a simple step to cut out the nonsense.
Thanks again, CT.

It's an old article I had, and I'm running out, but I did laugh at the booking for Talbut.

I think John Talbut still lives in Belgium but he's not been well for some years apparently.

And to add, he just doesn't look right in a Stoke shirt does he?

Eddie Clamp sent-off!

seem to recall he had a reputation of being an uncompromising hard man!

I look forward to the report of the return fixture at Turf Moor in March 1964...my first Burnley game - Jimmy was captain for the day against his former club!

I'm not sure how he would get away with playing now but he wasn't the only one in that era, our two goalscorers, while nothing like as bad as Clamp, could more than handle themselves.

Went to this game. We were stood behind the goal opposite the Boothen End where all but one of the goals were scored. My dad re-assured.me.at h/t that they would tire in the second half.because they were an old team. The goal that stands out for me was.our third from 'Bomber' Harris. A free.klck.hit so hard it was.still.rising when it hit the net. Also, despite my first.game.having been 5 years before it was the first time.I'd seen us wear our away kit.of white shirts, odd really since their shirt was wide red and white stripes.

I once recall us changing to white shirts and black shorts at Newcastle.

When I was a young kid I thought Gordon Harris's nickname was Bomber because he could hit shots like that. My word, he could strike a football.

Cheers, CT.
My first Clarets game.
It was to be another 3 years before my Dad relented and went on to the Turf with me.

As for that John Talbot....fancy sticking two sets of four up at Ritchie.
Well deserved booking, eh.

So maybe the game you would have chosen for games to remember.

If and when we ever get back to normal, I'll try and make the games to remember feature a regular one with posters choosing their favourite games.

My first ever away game! My dad took me, he wasn't a football fan but he decided we would go so he could watch Jimmy McIlroy play.

My grandad had started taking me to Turf Moor as a young boy the previous season, when we sold Jimmy Mac he vowed, along with many others, never to go to Turf Moor again. He never did!

I persuaded my dad to take me, he had no interest in football but took me to keep me quiet.

I was only very young when we went to Stoke for that game but do remember that we went by train - from Rawtenstall to Bury, changed trains there to Manchester Victoria. Walked from there to Piccadilly then train from there to Stoke. I still have the match programme.

How can I remember all that but not remember what I had for my tea last night?

I had relatives who never went again after he was sold.

One of my all time fav away days. From despair to elation to despair and finally wild elation. I was right behind the Gordon Harris thunderbolt. Fortunately for me the net got in the way.

Sadly can't remember too much about the game itself. There was disappointment at the end of the first half, but joy at the end.
The thing I do remember, vividly, were the smells, beer, tobacco, and incredible noise the crowd was capable of making.
Got me well and truly hooked.

I'd been to a few away games by this time with my dad but not many and I was still four seasons away from my first visit to the Victoria Ground.

There won't ever be a feature on this site from my first away game, that's for certain.

The 2-1 in 1961/62 then I saw us win there in the next four seasons, then draw one and win two in the 1970s.

I've been to everyone since that defeat. I was looking only the other day and my record at Ewood is won 9 drawn 2 lost 5.
