The awful thing is we probably will take all these things for granted, given time.
I hope not.

After a perfectly healthy 45 yo friend of mine caught the virus, went into Intensive Care, then was forced into an induced coma (they had to give him the option to want to do it whilst he was sat in the hospital), it made me realise that it's easy to take your own health for granted and that those of us that are healthy should feel lucky to be so

We all take too much for granted for much of the time. One example: my bin men came round about an hour ago and I went out and thanked them. I don’t think I’ll ever take important workers like this for granted again.

I've done exactly the same whenever I've seen them. The collection times seem to have changed around our area - I don't know if it's covid-19 impact, Easter bank holiday (they just come a day later, no breaks for the bin people) or it's that the council changed the contractor at the start of the month - they used to be collecting before I had finished my breakfast. .ClaretTony wrote: ↑Fri Apr 17, 2020 1:29 pmWe all take too much for granted for much of the time. Every time I have to go to the supermarket I start by thanking the person on the door who is controlling the queuing system and finish by thanking the cashier for their service. I also like to have a brief chat with them while they are scanning my stuff through. Being pleasant and polite costs nothing but the rewards are priceless.

Just this. I thank them and chat with them. I leave by wishing them all the best. Same with the guys on entry and exit duty. The NHS staff are getting most of the kudos (and why not indeed) but these people keep the food on our tables. Delvery guys driving the wagons. Binmen. All the ones keeping the water flowing and the gas and electricity working. Even the people keeping the internet going (where would we be without that right now - and that must be hard with people using it for work and keeping in touch with loved ones). So many people we have to be thankful to...stars, every one of them. I just hope they are remembered when all this is done.karatekid wrote: ↑Fri Apr 17, 2020 1:58 pmEvery time I have to go to the supermarket I start by thanking the person on the door who is controlling the queuing system and finish by thanking the cashier for their service. I'm not getting a lot of these comments tbh. I thought it was pretty standard stuff to be polite considerate and decent with other people....be it in McDonalds Mark's n sparks etc. Or wherever please and thank you are the norm in my world. Strange........houseboy wrote: ↑Fri Apr 17, 2020 2:22 pmJust this. I thank them and chat with them. I leave by wishing them all the best. Same with the guys on entry and exit duty. Absolutely right Tim. I am the same (FFS I have even inadvertantly said thank you to a cash machine on more than one occasion - honestly) but I think more people are being APPRECIATIVE now than ever before - and long may it continue.
Just as a question: am I weird or has anyone else ever said thank you to a cash machine without thinking?

Absolutely, houseboy. The number of times I've said 'you don't know what you've got till it's gone' over the years but never has it meant as.much as it does know. Almost weekend now but the days now seem to have nothing distinctive about them. Nothing to look back on and nowt to look forward to.

Wondering how long it'll be on the matchday threads before Chris Wood & offside is mentioned in the same sentence.

I found myself going the shop more and picking up bits. I’ve spent a fortune over the past month doing this. I’ve had about 5 big bags of doritoes. More than I’ve had in the last 10 yearsTheFamilyCat wrote: ↑Sat Apr 18, 2020 2:00 pmI've been avoiding supermarkets and not been able to get a delivery so picking up bits from the local shop as and when needed but their fresh fruit and veg is limited. Re: Never again will I take this for granted...
I've enjoyed reading this thread. But without trying to sound too pompous, we'll all start taking things for granted once again when life returns to normal.
It's human nature to take the mundane and everyday things for granted but at least this gives us a new perspective to appreciate things that we wouldn't otherwise give much thought to. That's something to be grateful for in itself.
And it won't take anything away from the joy we'll have at recommencing normal things again like being able to go down the pub and meet up with our mates.
