cycle route to malham

Post by claretnproud » Sun Apr 19, 2020 4:25 pm

was just wondering what best route from gargrave was. Not been for years. Best scenic route and any info once there would be appreciated. I am going on my own so no social distancing issues. Thanks in advance.

You're allowed exercise, and there is no rule to say that exercise must be taken only on streets where there is no view.

My old village. Grew up there and left when I got married, we still have many friends there and normally go up a few times a year. My parents are buried at Kirkby Malham Church. I would head from Gargrave up to Eshton and keep going past Eshton Hall, then about 4 miles on past Newfield Hall then it's Airton, Kirkby Malham then Malham. It's a shame the Farm Shop at Airton won't be open as you can get a good cupa and some wonderful home made food there. Instead of turning up to Eshton you could carry on forwards towards Hetton then turn left and come back on yourself for Calton which drops you down into Airton, then right for Kirby Makham, either route is picturesque. Take a packed lunch and plenty of juice with nothing being open. Enjoy your day.

The Environment Department has also stated that the public should “stay local and use open spaces near to your home where possible – do not travel unnecessarily”.

I think that covers my point. He is obviously not staying local

Read the new advice given out this week by the police on leaving the house to exercise.

Gargrave to Malham takes less than 30 mins on a bike and is a great route. I’ve done it dozens of time. It definitely constitutes a local ride.

How exactly is local defined? Round and round the block? If your exercise is an hour's bike ride, I don't see any objection to going in a straight(ish) line rather than going in circles; especially if you're going through sparsely populated areas.

Latest advice given when lockdown was extended a day or two back, was that a walk should last perhaps an hour, a run should last perhaps half an hour, and a bike ride somewhere between the two. So Gargrave to Malham, less than half an hour each way, would fit the criterion.

Nothing was mentioned about doing the bike ride in circles so you don't get too far from home.

It appears you are the one who is ignorant. Cycling in a local area - 7 miles/30 mins to destination on a bike isn't far - for an hour alone or with household members is not unreasonable. And wouldn't be deemed a breach of the rules by those responsible for enforcement i.e. the police.

I don’t think the op lives at Gargrave (otherwise would know routes to Malham)
I’m guessing he means he will travel to Gargrave then cycle to Malham + return.
Gargrave/Malham cycle is no problem...travelling to Gargrave to commence the exercise might be...subject to lates Gov advice which I haven’t heard

been in Gargrave for only 6 weeks so not and not been to Malham yet, hence the post.
However, irrespective of distance to Malham, what difference does it make whether cycling 20 or 100 miles in this glorious countryside.
I think common sense is far more important than rules made by mp's who hardly set foot outside London.

not been in a supermarket for a month. I would take 4 hours in the countryside before 15 minutes in asda any day of the week. Its just common sense. Nobody needs to explain or tell me that, I have worked it out all on my own.

Apparently (and funnily enough in Gargrave ... but thats not relative) today a group was all seen sat together having a break (all certainly not social distancing) about 3pm .... 🙄

some people are treating this lockdown as some sort of holiday. people need to understand the more time they keep away from everyone the more chance we have of saving lives. stay at home. Go to Malham when its more or less over or on top of. No need to go now and cycle there and put people at risk. That is selfish and extremely ignorant. Don't follow the sheep on here. Lets be honest they spend all their time on this message board for one reason only. Call me any names you want. I am just staying put.

Wish I lived in that area and had such scenery to enjoy! In suggesting that we might cycle 100 miles you do raise an issue for cyclists (and more particularly motorists). Making a very long journey increases the risk of an accident or breakdown. No matter how good a driver/cyclist you are (or worse think you are) this can happen.....so if anyone is thinking of a long trip for any superficial reason please consider that if something goes wrong then you are expecting a breakdown man ....or worse ....an ambulance to come and help.

Enjoy your bike ride. I've been out on my bike around Lancaster, out to Cockerham, Glasson Dock, and north toward Halton. We're lucky in having good cycle routes, particularly along the river Lune.

100 miles an exaggeration ( I wish ). The gamble is a sedatory lifestyle versus exercise. I prefer the exercise route. No guarantees in life and accept an accident could happen just like I accept I could get high blood pressure or heart disease by not exercising. My health has improved massively since taking regular exercise and no one will change my mind on this. Especially some clueless mp daaaan saaaarf. Get out and enjoy our quiet roads and beautiful countryside is my message. Far more positives than negatives.

It's interesting you should mention Malham. When this all blew up Malham was inundated with tourists. Cars and people all over. A field was opened up to get all the cars off the road. The owner, and his wife, were subsequently hospitalised with Coronavirus but thankfully have now recovered. You might find that people visiting the village because it has a nice view arent overly popular.

I suppose not. When you have 200+ people with about half a square mile each to roam in, you don't want anyone else coming in and cutting it to a quarter of a mile.

Thousands of them would be too much, but it's a shame there's no easy way of "sharing out" the countryside in a fair and reasonable way.

There is, & people have been doing it all weekend with no apparent problems, resident villagers & landowners I’ve come across haven’t batted a eyelid & everybody’s been going about there business in a safe & orderly fashion & maintaining safe distances. Walkers have been leaving alcohol wet wipes at the stiles when crossing into fields, it’s been more of an issue with dogs off the leads in the fields with the lambing season, some people are desperately trying to find problems that don’t exist.

So, along with dog poop bags hung from branches and strewn on paths we are now to see the delights of carelessly abandoned used wet wipes?

That wind was a beggar today Ten Bellies. It was so nice though I did a longer route and ended up doing 55 miles. Malham tarn was looked very very blue today and the fields were as green as green can be. Hard to imagine whats happening in the world when ot in our stunning countryside. utc.
